  • New Turbo

I just picked a Garrett turbo from a nissan s15 up pretty cheap. I think it will fit on the polo's manifold. Obviously I'll need fuel-reg, injectors, dump pie etc. Just wondering if v-tune would be enough to tune it?

I don't think it will. I'd look at going a more conventional route, rather than making it up as you go. It will be cheaper in the end.

Sorry, looking up the model numbers it's actually off an RB25 skyline engine. It's a T3 which i am pretty sure has the same flange as ours. I know the more conventional route is easier and cheaper, but i want more power than the K04, it's still a pretty small turbo, and if i'm gonna throw the money at it i don't want to be left hangin for more

You can pretty much make 100hp over stock with a K04, how much are you looking for?

It's the 45v4, which is the ball bearing version. I know it might be a pain to tune, but i figure it should give pretty good power. I would like to see 300hp so the K04 really doesn't cut it. But considering it in perfect cond for $200 i can afford some $ on tuning

Have you got someone lined up to do the software? That'll be a bigger hurdle to overcome.

                  You will need:
                  Front mount.
                  Injectors.
                  Custom exhaust manifold
                  Custom intake
                  Full exhaust

                  and a tune...

If you going to go to the effort of doing it all. Why not buy a 2871r or 3071r if you want more power.

I haven't got anyone lined up to do the software. Can you suggest someone?
If it is going to be to difficult i probably will go the gt3071r cause i know software is available for the 1.8t, but i'd like to work out what would be cheaper.

That's where your project could fall down. Although Custom-Code do software for the GT series big turbos, I couldn't do a phase 3 down here.

It's not the kind of thing you could buy off the shelf in my opinion. Just too many variables in the mix and too easy to cause an unwanted mechanical failure.

Thanks mate. Just downloaded v-tune and had a look, must have been dreamin', obviously cant do any altering maps.
So if I do go GT3071r, can anyone in melb do the software? or am i still gonna struggle with that?

Sorry mate, I don't have any names for you in Australia, let alone Melbourne. That's not that there aren't any.

Your probably best off going with an aftermarket computer. There are plenty of people that can tune a Motec or Haltec or whatever you think is best for your application. It will give you more flexibility in the long run.

If you want to use that particular turbo then I encourage you to talk to some people in the business and see if its a viable upgrade. It is not the easiest option to take but if thats the way you want to do it then go for it.

Some people just choose to go the easier option and buy off the shelf. In the end it may prove to be the most cost effective way to do it but you are after something extra. If thats the road you want to take then go for it dont be put off by other people. Just do your research and talk to the professionals before you open your wallet.
