  • Alright so I spoke to VW and they can do a stock sump for 450 bucks! bargain not. That probably rules out welding a new sump with a baffle kit. My mech mate is about to weld an equally old/oily sump from an SR20 soon so we might have to see how he goes with that. But if welding an old sump turns out to be a no go then this TSR drop in baffle plate might do the trick. Opinions please but I have a couple of reservations with it though. So the baffles will stop the rate at which oil leaves the pickup area - good, but compared to a gated baffle, it will also slow down the rate at which oil enters the oil pickup area from the other side too - bad yes? Now I have no idea how far up the sump walls the oil sits compared to the baffles in this TSR sump especially when you are under way and a fair amount of oil is up in the engine. So even if its harder for oil to enter the oil pickup area than in a gated sump, is the pickup area always going to be full of oil because oil will be coming in over as well as under the baffles that's on the inlet side or will the oil coming in be forced to move in through those small holes in the baffle walls? I doubt it would work as well as a gated baffle but could it be worse than nothing?

    • yank the sump off your spare motor and tip a couple of litres of water into it?

but really - if you wanted to put baffles into a 2nd hand sump without welding it, make plates that go across it with a tab on either end and stick a bolt through it - it'll seal fine

      • not a bad idea re the tabs. Just sold the INA sump. I'm a dope for not measuring the baffle heights/sizes relative to the flange etc. Got in contact with Bill/Badger 5 and he said to be careful of sumps that look OEM that have baffles already welded in them. He said he's seen some suspect castings and it was him that suggested welding the forge trays into an OE sump so that you know you are dealing with a good casting. I'll keep thinking. If you're interested we could split the shipping on the TSR if peeps think they are ok without gates.

          • Thatd be good mate. The distance from the the cyl 1 side of the sump to the first baffle and then how far apart the baffles are from each other, the heights of the baffles relative to the top flange (probably have to remove the top plate for that), the height of the cut out in the one that the oil pickup fits into. zero rush mate - just whenever. thx

              • Sweet. I knew you could do Liam. Well done buddy. Yeah I had it in the back of my mind all weekend thinking I should have been up there. You at Tamworth and Pete went to South Circuit. Me stuffing around with the car chasing a sound that I hope is a boost leak because if its not then I have a real problem. Good on ya! A '79 ladder frame Corvette beats a supercharged GTS - that is gold.

edit: what happened on your last run?

                • Thanks Sam! I'm pretty stoked about it. I actually missed my last two runs (we got 6 runs in), but thankfully Liam didn't go any quicker... Damn power steering belt again - it's been fine for months and for the last 5 events, but I tossed it in the burnout on both my 5th and 6th runs and had to abort them. Tossing it on the 6th run wasn't that surprising I guess - they're never the same once they've been tossed once, I didn't have a new spare to put on. I was sure Liam would get me on his 6th run, lots of people had stopped by that point so they cycled through fast and he would have still had hot tyres. He told me he was stoked when he saw me drop out after the burnout, he was thinking he had it in the bag, but apparently he badly missed his 2nd to 3rd shift on the straight.

Not good to hear about the noise, hope it's something simple.

My brother was at Eastern Creek yesterday too, in his MX5.

                  • Yeah I could see it was real close after the third runs. That would have been a good amount of pressure going into the 4th runs then. I love it when its like that.
Pete did say he was in MX5-ville there. He's done his engine though. Kept blowing his dipstick out and oil coating his engine bay. He did a 1:06.6. Looks like your brother did a 1:07.4.
I've just built a boost leak pressure tester so hopefully I'll find the drama in the next couple of days.

                    • Yeh, I had him on every run, but he kept getting closer. I could've gone a bit quicker still, on my 4th run I was a bit skatey coming on to the straight and had to lift, and I think I could've also picked up a bit more time both at the end of the main straight and through the S after the second straight. But the track was fairly slippery as it was so cold and dusty - as it was we were quicker than a lot of the AWD cars, and some others that we maybe shouldn't have been. Neither Liam or I had made it up there for practise on Saturday, apparently Riley had done a dozen runs or so on Saturday. Out of interest, what time did you do there last year?

                      Ah, that's no good.

Ok, sounds good, hope you get it sorted soon. You planning on heading to the last round?

                      • yeah I'd like to do Huntley. I'll get the date locked in before I get all excited though. The sub regs will come out soon for that so we'll know if there's a practice day or not soon enough.

                        Not telling....

                          • Lol, I'm catching up to you in my old boat!

That would be great if you can make it to Huntley. They said at the presentation on Sunday that there will be a practice day. Not that I've been very good at making it to practice days so far - I keep paying for them and then life gets in the way and I don't arrive until after it's over. I just barely made it in time for a couple of quick practice runs at Kempsey, but that's the only one I've actually managed to make it to practice at so far.

                            • Make a weekend of it. It's a nice part of the coast down there to stay over on sat night. Since they are running practice, They'll have a security guard for the cars in the pits overnight I'd say. It'll suit your car. There's one really scary right kink and then a chicane and that's it. The rest is straights up a hill that is steeper than any part of Panorama, so it's a real full throttle horsepower track. It's cool because when you finish your run the road loops around and you can get out and watch the rest of your own class come up.
so get that power steering belt sorted and be ready. I have to beat the boat!
