Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 5 speed gearbox replacement - GSJ vs. GET code

    Hi,
Have a failed 5 speed box in my daughter's '05 1.6 Polo sedan. Have found a 9N polo 5 speed manual box with the gearbox code GET available online. My daughter's Polo has a GSJ coded box according to the VIN. They are both 02T boxes from what I can gather, and the VAG site shows them as having the same external structure. It is likely the GET box came from a 1.4 and although I'm looking for a box for a 1.6, would the GET box work? Would there be much involved to adapt it, as finding an exact match in a wreckers is very hard.
    TIA
    Steve

The main difference is the bell housing. Swapping the GSJ housing with the GET box worked well. The other difference is the diff output flanges, which are slightly larger on the GET box. Once again, swapping them over was possible. Linkages, clutch cylinder and ratios all matched up fine
