  • VW Oil..

So.. i was at VW Dealership this afternoon waiting for my new cup holder to get fitted.. desided to walk around the corner to buy some stuff for my 30k service.. came down to asking if i can get some after market oil cuz the vw is $130 for 5L..

So the question is... is there an oil that i can use that doesnt stuff my warrenty up?

    Yes.

You just need to find one that matches the viscosity and meets the VW standard. It should be marked on the pack.

Which oil spec does your owners manual call for? That would be a good starting point.

I'd also be asking why the Service Dept charges ~$80 & spares charge $130

Fuchs do a couple of oils that appear to have gone through the VW 502/503/505/506 standards.

The other way would be to shoot a few emails off to the tech departments of the various oil suppliers.

attached is a list of approved oils - some are even sold in Australia
edit: or maybe it isn't attached because the forum has a 20kb limit on acrobat files

      edit2: VAG oil bulletins here

I've been using castrol edge 0w-40 which is VW approved. It cost me $65 for 5L.

            30k service is oil $75 + filter $25 + washer $3, pollen filter $19, brake fluid $19 + labour $225 + sundries
I was quoted $400 all up for that (on a Skoda - maybe you get charged VW tax?)
It's not a lot considering it only happens every 12 months or so.

Maybe you should get a quote off another dealer or find an independant.

DIY (unless you are suitably qualified) will put your engine warranty in jeopardy.

Using an independent (but MTA registered) mechanic keeps your warranty intact.

I have done my last 2 oil changes with MOBIL1 0W-40, VW approved 502.00/503.01/505. Costs a bit more than some of the others but runs smoother. And really, whats an extra $30 to run good oil? Ran MOBIL1 in my old swift gti too, made the engine run like new.

What do VW dealer think about BYO oil (as long as it's the correct viscosity)?

Mazda used dino oil so I used to bring Mobil 1 or Motul Turbo Light and gear oil and they were more than happy to use that instead of their standard Castrol on my old MX, are VW dealers likely to get anal about it (or at the prospect of making less money on servicing)?

                          Hey gentleman,
Took mine in to Essendon Volkswagon for 15000kms service yesterday cost $330 for Oil change, Oil filter and safety checks everything pretty much. They used Castrol Edge and I must say I can notice the difference, big difference to Fuchs. Don’t get me wrong, Fuchs is good, very good oil.... But Castrol edge is better, much better anyway, I payed the money got the stamp, my dad (who is a mechanic) changed the sparkplugs and air filter I only payed for the parts. $330 for an oil change is a rip off as it cost me $100 for the oil when I saw it at super cheap for almost half that price...bloody pricks lol

Anyways the point im trying to make is... Castrol edge is worth the edge haha give it a go boys, you wont be disapointed!

Which Edge? 0w40 or 5w30? (or one of the other 2 versions)
