The only issue is if you go make a claim and they use the illegal tint to refuse it. You have to decide whether you take that risk.

I had (barely) illegal tint (Quantum 28 triple metal layer32%VLT + an illegal band tint on the windscreen) on my Subaru and told my insurance company that I had tinted windows. My "out" was that I bought it 2nd hand, so the tint could have been put on by the previous owner and "it's gone through rego without a problem so I figured it was legal". The car already had factory 7% so it was probably 26% VLT all up.

In the 4 years I had the car the tint never attracted the attention of the police & was never checked as part of the yearly Vehicle Inspection process.

I had a Nissan with 35% for 7 years previous to the Soob and it was checked once as part of a annual Vehicle Inspection where I think the guy had just got his ticket (and the light emittance machine) and was doing everything by the book.

So unless you generally attract police attention, the tint shouldn't increase it.
As for insurance, ring your insurer as a general inquiry & ask what would happen.

says here that front window has to be minimum 75%
does everyone just get 20% or 35% all round then?
or for example get 20% on sides and rear and leave the front 75%....im thinking that would look a bit funny
The 75% is for the windscreen.
      35% is all other windows.

The colour of your interior & headlining will affect the look too. Darker interiors will make the tint look darker.

WRT night use - I never had any problems with mine at night or in the rain - worst was the metal sheen seemed to reduce perving ability

NB: check what the actual VLT is because some of the films VLT is different to what the number in the name implies

Me being me, I like things on legal side.

          Mine is 35%.

Happy with it. Actually it's around 32% because of the factory tint (the blue hue). I do have to lower my windows at times reversing out at night if the weather isn't great... so personally I wouldn't go any darker.

I will try to find some photos later.

Semi deceiving photos because the tint photos were taken on a dull day so look darker

            Stock Liberty

            Quantum 28

            Before

            Quantum 28

Quantum 28 on a sunny day - not as dark as you'd hope

That's how you take a photo of window tint...straight on...not at an angle.

Dude, I got a photo of my old car that looks just like that!

Seriously, I'm strongly considering going legal 35 on sides & back & totally illegal 70 on my windscreen. I saw it done on a P.I.s Corolla when I had the Lib done & it looked great. Will also come in handy during the daily commute with the sun coming straight into the front of the car.

I was in the same position as you a while ago I couldnt decide how dark to go. I was also concerned about insurance and all the rest. Do a search and you will find the thread on here, you may find it interesting.

I ended up going 20%, which is really 17% because of the factory 3%. I find it a bit too dark at night when reversing and for good visibility. In daytime I think it is just about perfect. If I had to do it again I would consider going to a 25% tint, which is what I originally wanted but they didnt stock 25% so I said f**k it ill just go with 20%. I definately would not do 35% its too light.

In the end I did tell my insurance I had window tinting but they didnt ask how dark and I didnt tell them either.
