Polo love and question

G'day guys,
First post (except the neewbie one). I took possession of my little beloved 06 polo Gti yesterday and by far the coolest car I have owned. I've been through the ricer stage with WRXs, through the bogan stage with fords and through the classic phase of minis and mighty boys. Now I'm in the family stage with a forester. And my Gotta get to work stage now with the polo Gti.
My question is, does the stock exhaust normally sound beefy and a little loud(not like a WRX) but up there.
How do I know if it's been through a stage 1 tune?
And finally, is the turbo spool normally so quiet?

I think for the size of the car, the exhaust definitely has a bit of a beefy rumble to it. My turbo spool is pretty quiet from the cabin. A bigger intake made it louder, and then i drowned it out again with a downpipe.

But good to hear your enjoying it. They're neat little cars

If you can do a log with a vcds cable or other type then you should be able to see if its been tuned

Yeah the go good. I like that I can feel the road and the seats are nice and snug. Is it also normal to hear air "hissing" when resting on the brake pedal? Cheers.

Nope, that's not normal. Does the pedal go longer/to the floor? Is the pedal overly hard to press or kinda normal brake pedal feel? There is a large vacuum style line which runs off the master cylinder, it's black plastic and runs across the fire wall to the passenger side. If that's disconnected, you get no servo assistance so a rock hard pedal.

Yeah the polo does sound quite good with the stock exhaust and yeah, very little turbo noises with stock intake, factory airbox set-up and stock DV. A bigger intake can add a little noise and will flow better.

There's no easy way to tell if the car is tuned other than logging it/dyno run and see what boost it's making. Even than, you won't know what tune. I'm not aware of any way of identifying which tune the car may have... a tuner may be able to pull the ecu file which may have thumb prints to ID it. I'm not aware of any Perth based forum members who'd have that software.

A boost gauge and a good run in 3rd would giveaway a tune.

I don't like the sound of hissing comment. Does the engine speed change when you do this?

Cheers for the replies, the brake feels normal just when I sit on the brake I can hear the hissing. No change to engine speed that I can tell. I will investigate further and check the line. As far as a tune goes and tuners in Perth I'll have a look around. The ball n chain has specifically told me no mods to this but I'll convince her that it's for the good of the car somehow. It was pouring rain yesterday and it was slipping through 3rd to 4th. But that's in the rain and taking the roads into account wouldn't be a true indication.

I have hacked out the front of the stock air intake (that useless flap thing) and moulded 63mm silicon pipe all the way to a 72mm adapter at the air box. Looks good, not too much noise but definitely more air getting pushed in.
Now, it felt like I was loosing boost so I changed out the stock BOV and replaced it with a stock XR6turbo one and it has fixed the problem by the feel of it. Would a aftermarket Plumb back BOV make much of a difference to the sound? Now off to get a boost gauge and "look" at what else I can do.

I took it for a blat and running 9psi, a little low but from what I can gather that's about stock. Also the engine cuts when left foot braking and on the accelerator, WTH is the go with that. It looks like the std DV was on since new. So I'll keep the xr6 one on for now.

Gavin, that would be amazing, it would be awesome to feel what life could be like.

Yup she's stock. Get ready for a surprise when you try the tune.

Yeah they don't like left foot braking, it's programmed into the cars (safety stuff), not a fault. Some tunes can disable this.

Just say the tune makes the car more compatible with Australian fuels and improves economy. Worked for me!
