  • Brembo brake kit

I have just bought myself a second hand but absolutely immaculate Polo GTi and so far I am loving it. I decided to buy used because I have plans to modify the car a lot and didn't think it was necessary to buy new if I was just gong to void the warranty. Anyway, I am planning on an APR Stage 1 Brembo brake kit and i'm not sure if my current wheels will fit with it. I have the Exor STP wheels and I love these wheels so much and really don't want to change them. Does anyone know if the Brembo kit will fit with these wheels?

Wheel pic (this is not my car, props to the owner for this one)

You would be best to speak to Guy about that.I'm sure he'll chime in shortly.

Another owner here, jamesatfysh, has installed this kit because he is developing the car for tarmac rallying. I'd suggest you PM him, as he has reported considerable problems in identifying wheels that will fit. At present, I think he has a set of 17" TT wheels. He originally had the Exor wheels and they did NOT fit over the Brembos.

There are other big brake options which do not give such wheel fitment problems. For example, fitting 312mm disks and calipers from an Audi TT will enable you to use the stock 16's as well as virtually any 17's; fitting MkIV R32 brake disks and calipers means you can use most 17's; and I think Guy also has an Alcon kit that still fits under most 17's

                Wrong...

He had the horrible looking 17s from VW. The Exor's look good. (unbiased opinion)

However, if you do investigate further, let me know, I want the bigger brakes too

                Also, that's vkswgn's car.

                  Whatever...

The point is that james discovered great problems sourcing 17's that can clear the Brembo kit.

What a good idea... give false information that might lead someone to spending a few thousand dollars getting new wheels when they might be able to use the ones they have...

The point is, he had trouble with 1 set of VW 17s. Others may fit, ask Guy or your local APR dealer for a wheel fitting template.

In case anyone is interested in what I actually tried (ie wheels that I test fitted to the front - all 17"s):

VW OEM Siata (these were originally fitted to the car when I bought it but came off when the Brembos went on)
VW OEM Exor - my dealer lent me these when the Siata's didn't fit
                      OZ Ultraleggerra
                      Speedy Cross-5
                      Speedy Fusion
                      Speedy Lite-5
                      Speedy Lite-7
                      Speedy Lite-Fin
(a set Timbo kindly lent me - can't remember the name)

There were a few others also but can't remember off the top of my head - if anyone is really interested I can check my records at work. I believe I have tried most of the 17" 5x100 wheels available through my local wheel shop that aren't chrome/bling specials.

Some of the wheels - including the Exor - would have fitted with spacers, but as a track car I wasn't willing to go down that path. The problem is not the clearance around the brake, but the face of the caliper hitting the back of the spokes due to the incorrect offset of most 17" wheels. The TT wheels fit because of the large hub which helps the spokes clear the caliper.

I've now bought a 2nd set of TT wheels which will become my track set.

If anyone finds a set of 17"s that do clear the APR Brembo kit please let me know as I'll be out buying a couple of sets of those wheels the very next day. The TT wheels are nice but quite heavy and I'd prefer a thinner spoke.

Try there for good wheels, obviously Guy would be best to confirm anything.

I should have added to VeeDubya and tosspot (or anyone else) - I don't know where either of you are located, but if you are anywhere near Canberra and want to test fit your wheels over the Brembos on my car before you make a purchase you're most welcome.

Nothing against the Brembos, but -- as I pointed out in my original post in this thread -- there are other big brake options which do not cause as many wheel fitment headaches, or cost as much.
