Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Polo 9N3 GTI Rear rotor and pad change

I'm thinking of tackling this tomorrow.

I have the rotors and will buy some pads. What other parts do I need? Are there some stretch bolts that I need to replace? Any tips on a resource to find lists of these things rather than having to nag here?
    I guess erWIN really.

When I get my brake parts gsl rallysport always provide new caliper bolts. I think they are meant to be changed every time, I do regardless.

You'll need to wind the pistons back in. I had real trouble winding mine in, they just wouldn't turn, so having the tool to do that is handy. Supercheap do a generic one that will do the job if you're stuck, there are also specific kits to do it that are better I got mine off of ebay.

Other than that they are pretty easy to do. Sometimes the rotor can be stuck on good I use a gympie to lightly tap the old rotor off the hub comes off in 1 go usually.

Awesome. Thanks for the tip. I ordered some pads and will use the windback kit from super cheap.

As rgv said, a rubber mallet and some wd40 down the back of the hub can make it easier to remove. Also grab some brake cleaner spray to wipe over the caliper and disc (once installed) to remove contaminants. I haven't change rears rotors, but have changed the fronts easily.

I remember trying to get my fronts off with a rubber mallet and wd40.
I won't be rushing to try that again.
First tap with the gympie, straight off. Depends if you want to reuse the rotor for some reason though a light tap shouldn't hurt it. If in doubt use a block of wood as well.
I also leave the retaining screw in a bit so the rotor doesn't fall off and drop onto the floor/me.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll let you know how I go Saturday. I decided to order the proper windback tool to minimise the swearing.
