  • Hi All Polo Owners! Newbie here....

    Hey guys,

Leon is the name, and just found this VW forum from googleing i'm thinking of getting a used Polo GTi once i've sold my little Toyota Echo.
    Here's a photo..

I need your help in buying a good GTi. any hints or tips (anything i should be looking out for..)?? also would the LCD GPS system from VW fit on the Polo? I know some of you put aftermarket system.

anyway...nice chatting with you guys, and hopefully someone will buy my echo !

    Welcome!

    Things to look out for:

    1. It has been serviced per the schedule.
    2. Is it modified? You need to decide whether you are happy to buy a chipped/modified vehicle or if you want to buy it/keep it stock.
    3. How is the gearbox? If the gearbox is crunching, you would either stay away or make sure the warranty is valid to get it repaired under warranty. Personally I would stay away.
    3. Being an older example, I would assume it would need to undergo a 35A7 recall for the gearbox oil (look at the thread titled Polo GTI Recall). If it hasn't - no big deal, just make sure you get that done if you purchase it.

Other than that, expect a completely different experience compared to the Echo

first and foremost....i'll say it before anyone else does.....its GTI. as said many times before, GTi is a Swift, Peugeot 206 and Proton Satria....not a VW.

NickZ has some good points there on what to look out for. i personally bought my GTI second hand with 24,000k's on the clock and have loved every second of it. it's a 2006 model and my gearbox it starting to get a bit tougher so i will be taking it in to VW for the oil change.

most of us on here are chasing power so definitely find out whether it has been chipped (mine was) and save yourself the $1590 (if thats what you are into). apart from that mate, definitely get one and enjoy it...make sure you stay a member of this site as use it frequently as you will find out a lot of info and it becomes really helpful in regards to your car.

you'll realise theres more to owning a VW than just driving it...its a lifestyle.

Welcome Leon ... think the others have more or less covered what to look for when buying. Good luck with selling the Toymota and getting into a GTI ... you'll love it.

True, you'd see why if you drive one.

Also, if my name was Leon I'd buy a SEAT Leon

Pretty quiet on the highway. I just hopped out after a three hour drive, my first long trip in my second hand GTI. Picked it up a couple of months ago.

              Its awesome!!!!

Depends what tyres you have on the car really...Wind noise at 130km/h is loud, but the Polo has a sharper front profile then the Echo, so(assuming the Echo can get to 130kh/h), the wind noise from the Polo would be less then pronounced then the Echo with the windows up, but you don't really notice it anyway.

                    You will love it

Hi i drove an echo as a company car and now drive a yaris for work and im not saying they are bad but when i drive my gti its like driving a sports car you will love it, it drives like its got a big 6 cyl eng it will idle up my driveway where the yaris will stall i find it mutch easier to drive and the wet and dry handling is great
i have had my red gti for 2 years and every time i drive i still love it nothing available to update to yet if a dsg polo with 5 doors came out i would think about it but im not holding my breath i have no mods and cant see any reason to as im still happy with the performance .The exhaust is a little loud im used to the toyota but i have no reason to buy a sports exhaust due it allready having it.so goes for the wheels/tyres seat peddles ect the car has everything i needed
from day one .Also i have had no warranty work done has been good since day one.I would recommend to any one after a compact to get a vw.
