Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Yeah an exhaust manifold is a massive job. That's why I did everything I could to each an every bit when it was apart because you don't want to be going back there.

      G'day, yeah my car had the ATP manifold on it initially, though between stretched turbo bolts and cracked manifold, I just needed something that was reliable so went back to stock. On reflection, the crack to the manifold could have occurred for a few reasons, not just that of build quality of the manifold as the turbo itself (hybrid) also died due to insufficient oil or excessive heat - jury is still out on exactly what. Though the turbo internals were cooked, so was massive heat which wouldn't help.

      Yeah it lost a little power, not huge but I'd say marginally noticeable. It still made 170kwatw with standard manifold, at 23psi I think. Cost per kilowatt, it didn't add up to buy a JBS manifold as you're looking at around the $1k delivered from recollection. If the internals were built, than it'd be a different cost vs benefit. And yeah, cylinder 3 is crazy small. In its current tune, it's not making that kind of power any more, running 18psi boost.

        yeh i might just leave the power level and stuff as it is and slowly peace together stage 3 i might just clean up the engine bay abit and work on all the little things for know thxz for all the info and sean 170kwatws in a polo must be a handfull my mate had 161kwatw in his honda civic ep3r and that had lsd and just wheel spun like crazy was alot of fun lol

          It'd be closer to the 160kw now and the new turbo spools later so is more drivable than before, it used to be stronger lower in the revs which made it a bit more challenging for powering through corners - but yeah it's quite a hoot.

            yeh befor i put on my intercooler it was spooling way to fast and spiking to 22psi and just wheel spin all 1st and 2nd and dropped off at 4500 i hated it so much. soon as i put the intercooler on it fixed the spike and come on smoother and more controlled made it feel unreal and holds power to readline so that new turbo would be perfect i would say i was looking at the ftg turbos i cant find much about them

              There's not much useful info available on them. A few people start saying they are sufficient for their application, then others chime in saying it's an ebay turbo and must be crap. They come with a 12month warranty, the billet ones with 24 months, so that'll do me for some confidence in the thing. Re the hybrid turbo, Gavin and I ran the same turbo's, his was more linear than my hybrid. No idea why, but how his is, that's a nice blend across the power range for a daily. My FTG has the larger compressor wheel, for a daily car I'd probably go the standard sized wheel as it can be a little laggy, more like a WRX, waiting for revs for it to go. But for that I have a stronger upper rev range holding boost flat to redline. On my daily polo, that'll peak boost at 16psi, but is 7psi at 6000rpm.

              Louis also has the same FTG on his car, he drives his daily so would be interesting in his opinion. Mine only gets driven once a week, if that.

                As Sean said, there's not a great deal of information surrounding the FTG turbos, good or bad. In saying that I've been very happy so far and permitting it lasts and continues to perform as good as it is currently, it's hard to find another turbo that will give you the same performance for $ spent.

                As a daily, I find the turbo very good. It comes down to what you get used to though as well. I think it's worth the sacrifice of spooling later, it means a more comfortable drive around town changing under 3000rpm, and much stronger mid and top end power. I had the same issue with the stock turbo, if anything I thought it spooled to much to early, which I had traction issues with, then when you want the boost to hold it would die off early.

                I can see how people like Sean, with having both cars to drive back to back, could feel that the FTG upsized wheel feels laggy, but for track work it's very rare you would see under 3000rpm at any time and for daily driving the car has more then enough torque before the turbo spools to be able to slide into traffic comfortablely anyways. Like I said, it's what you get used to. I probably only don't find it laggy partially due to the fact I don't have a polo with a stock turbo to compare after driving with the FTG
