  • Polo Gti Gearboxes

Just thought i would throw this in as it is quite a hot topic amongst the Pog clan and would be the first thing i would recommend trying even if you dont experience the fault as it makes the gearbox change as smooth as the preverbial.
Guys and gals!! I had a Gti Present with a gearbox fault to the point i thOught it was going to need syncros. Crunching every shift. Suspect syncro hub / baulk ring failure. Had a ponder and remembered an old fix on the 02A gearboxes , which is a cable shift similar to the Polo. Now i had a few Cupras with the ABF unit and 02a box doing the same. Fix was drain the oil and fill with 2 litres of Redline MTl which has poly and has SUPERB friction properties. I did this to the Polo Gti in question and ran the vehicle for about 50ks and after that the thing was quiete and was shifting VERY smooth. No crunching up or down the box. Again an old fix proves to be one of the best.
I thoroughly recommend you try this if you are having any issues with your Polo Gearbox.

However I thought redline was no good for VW boxes?

Redline is available at present in Coventry Auto parts, Bursons, Autopro and some Autobarns. Your boutique specialists im sure will stock it as well and you can expect to pay $35 per litre and you need 2

Redline transmission oils are very well known for its good performance. Even used in automatic performance machines... which I used for last time.

It's good oil, only bad thing I heard was my friend who knows his car well, put redline oil, and was so ?thin after a couple of track days, he now lost his 3rd gear. His car is 350Z. He said he'll try different oil next time...

Oh well, but yes general consensus is 'redline rules'.

Yeah it has come a long way mate, that cupra fix i did back in 95 kinda time frame, so i would say it has been tested more since.
Mischa mate give this a try too man for the sake of $70 its worth a try.
                    Cheers

Ok, they replaced the synthetic G'box oil with mineral oil under the 35a7 recall. Turned the notchy box with the crunching 2nd into a box with smoothness like my mk4 2.0L sport had. Fixed the box right up good and proper like. VERY happy.

Ring your dealer even if you aren't having troubles and tell them you want it changed anyway if they haven't already.

Yeah the original stuff comes out like water man, thats the reason i use Redline in case of any premature wear but if you are under warranty well you would be silly not to take them up on it and then its on them if it turns nasty.

ps with the new oil im sure you will find it will get better and better the more use it gets, as it coats the bearings and syncros
