Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Those wheels look like they belong on an aircraft. They look so mechanical or something, don't know how to explain it.

Woah. Those discs look freaking awesome mate. Loving what you've done there.

In regards to the comments about redstuffs, I believe that quozl runs redstuffs on his .:R for targa use. So I don't think they can be that bad.

Yes mate your right. Its the way it came out of the factory. Its just because its lowered its more pronounced. you can get 35/45 (i think thats the right numbers) drop spring (35mm front 45mm rear) but im not to worried.

Well yesterday i finally got around to getting Jimmy Mac to put the wishbone bushes put in my car. Big thanks goes to Jimmy for his fantastic services as usual. My very first impression was the steering felt more direct. Then today i went for a run up some mountains and when i wasnt stuck behind motorcycles i must say its more confidence inspiring through the twisty stuff. I also havent noticed any axle tramp when taking off from a standing start. But on that ill tell more once ive gone out for a real drive esp at the drags.

As you can see by the below pics the standard rear wishbone bush is voided, where the one i replaced it with is solid. And the front wishbone bush has been replaced by a polyurethane one.

Now i know alot will say these could be placebo affect because of putting them in and hoping they would do something. But i have let JASN78 take the car for a mountain run last week and again this week. So he can give a unbiased opinion. And anyone that wants to come and have a drive of it feel free to pm or call me and organise a time.

Ill take some picks and show you what the standard bushes are like and what the ones i put in are like. With some info about them.

Ok it went from this. Rear wishbone bush

                  to this rear wishbone bush

and from this front wishbone bush

                  to this front wishbone bush

the other option for the rear wishbone bush

                  is to use this

                  which looks like this
                  .

Now i will wait for Jimmy to chime in on this but the later option is much quicker. I went for the first option so i could be 100% sure they fit. Which they did. And also to work out how the second option works.

Any questions feel free to ask.

Ok i apologise for the pics they were done during the heat of the moment.

Safely place the car on stands

This is the bush pre press - cut the lip of the bush to make the press out easier

                        Lip cut off bush

                        Press out bush

This is how it looks pressed out

Clean out the orifice with emery then you rubber grease the new bushes

                        New bushes installed

View of old void bush in the alloy console

View of the bush removed. You remove the original (Nylon) by cutting and splitting

Installing new bushes ( clean/dress the console oriface and clean the new bush) press in bush with void bush tool. Very tight alloy to alloy, just make sure and SOAK the bush and console with lubricant. Flats of the hex in the bush must sit top and bottom as the wishbone is keyed this way. If you leave the console on the vehicle you will need a good ratchet strap to pull the arm back into the console bush, also soak this in lubricant
Next step - Torque all bolts and have fun
                        Cheers
                        JMac

Hey Jimmy, do you need to use an Arbor press, or can you use a large vice and the appropriate dowels?
