Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • New GTI and first time VW Owner :) 08 Polo GTI Cup Edition

    Hey guys,

Just wanted to share a couple of pics of my new (to me) GTI!

I love it but I have one issue. About half the time when I turn the car on my front passenger window will wind itself down. Then I can't put it up for roughly 10 seconds. Also both passenger side window switches don't work whatsoever, but I can control them fine from the driver master control panel. Any thoughts?

Wowy - looks awesome. Mind if I ask what wheels you are running? - or are they stockys that come with the cup model?

They suit it so well! I can't seem to find any of these anywhere - anyone know if a wheel that looks similar to this that will fit the pog? Need to get rid of the detroits (previous owner gutterered them everyday)

I'd be stunned if there's any in australia.

That's the first one I have seen in RHD. Was that an official NZ car or is it an import from Japan or something.

You might have some bad wiring in the passenger door shut, that's a guess though.

Its a Japanese import. I checked the connections in the door and the pins looked okay. Have just dropped it off at the dealer today to let them sort it out

Yep - looks like not too many 17 aristo's were made though - seems like most were 18s (Golf r32 etc)

Just wondering if theres a similar spokey wheel out there that would fit ours

Welcome to the forum! I saw that car on Trademe...good score. Did they really only make 200 of the cup model? Seems there are no shortage of the more regular GTIs coming in from Japan. So what's your first mod?!

There was another cup edition on trademe in the south island, this one was listed on trademe, but not as a cup edition

See I'm not sure whether it was 200 per region or 200 overall... steering wheel only says 10/200

Haha, first mod I did was replace the japanese double din headunit out as it was busted and disconnect a bunch of the japanese toll road stuff... Probably going to work on getting a pod filter into the airbox for some turbo whooshy noises, haha.

                          Awesome find!
                          Great looking machine.

Which city are you in; I'm in Auckland?
Just done an exhaust 2.5" on my 2007 GTI Polo. WOWOOOWOW! Such a MASSIVE difference!
Really looking forward to a re-program of the ECU.

What other mods are you considering?

                            I'm in Auckland too

With this car I'm not gonna go too crazy with modding, most I'll probably do is an ECU flash, some coilovers one day, and a not that loud exhaust... My last car was too bumpy, too loud and the tyres I kept on buying never lasted very long hahaha

Where is the best place for an ECU flash in auckland and what program do they flash?

There are a few options with flashing; one is guy called Basil from Christchurch (though he comes to Auckland regularly). The next is Robin from Torque Performance in Rosebank Road, Avondale. Another company, also out West, also retails parts, can't remember the name, sorry.
As for which program, ask them, as I'm not sure what is used / available.
The exhaust is a touchy subject; totally agree about the droning, noisy 'ricer' type exhausts; I've also just moved from 'that' kind of car. After researching, and matching the components, mine has added a SMALL amount of extra noise inside. But the POWER delivery. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWESOME! Loads of lower and midrange improvement.

Which part of Auckland are you in?
