  • Tinting in melbourne

I've been looking around for information on window tinting in melbourne but can't seem to find any conclusive information. Does anyone have any recomendations for where to get it done and what product to get? I'm looking for the darkest legal that would suite the black (black prefferably nothing silvery or so)

Try Rob at Cartint in Ringwood - http://www.cartint.net.au/ - he did my red GTI (and black cars previously) brilliantly. His darkest tint doesn't have that silvery look many have.

He's been tinting for years and does many show cars - you may pay a little more, but he's good. Mind you, after doing my Polo he said it was a bugger of a job, so he may not like my referring you...

But if you say Amy sent you it may help.

    Cheers!
    PogoAmy.

You've been reading my mind. I spent quite a bit of time researching over the last couple of days and like you, no solid info.

I decided to hang back and deal with the factory tint until I can see a type of tint on a black car and go YES! That's what I want and then go ask them. But failing that, if you decide on getting yours done by the Rob, let me know.

You'd be looking at only around $100 more than crap merchants like Tint Professor.

As Oilburna said, Rob's more than happy to chat to you and let you watch all he does, even explaining why this is done, that is done etc. So it can be quite interesting. I had him do mine without removing door trim, and he did a great job.

I've also seen him trash a sizeable piece of tint just because he was unhappy with a tiny nick or whatever that nobody else would likely notice. Rob cares about what he does, so is well worth the fee.

            Cheers!

Well, Amy. I think you've ruined it for all of us. I emailed Rob asking him for a quote and told him the car I have and this is what he said.

"I've only done the one and to be honest I wouldn't like another as they are quite difficult to get on. The one I did was for an old customer who pleaded with me to do it."

I emailed him back and this time I dropped your name.

I said if you really feel uncomfortable working on my car, then I respect your decision.

If he does indeed knock me back. I'll understand. But I still admire the heck out of the guy for being so honest.

at least he said he didn't like doing them, much better than to do it while not happy. I hope we will find someone good at the end. Thanks for the attempt Max

Haha, I wouldn't say I pleaded, but anyway...

I could tell it was a bugger, but he never got surly or anything - great guy, backed up by his honesty with you.

Good luck guys - I tried!

                    Cheers!

hey Amy, do you have any idea what he thought it was a hard job? It would just be good to have the heads up for when we see other installers

That's a good point. Didn't think about that.

After my reply to Rob (and dropping Amy's name) he sent me back an email and said, "Ah. Now I know where you're from" -- Haha. He's on to me!

He asked if it was a 2 or 4 door, I told him 2 and now I'm waiting to hear back.

At this point. Knowing now that tinting a Polo is a hard job, I'm either going to go with Rob (if he accepts) or with the dealer if I can get a good price.

I'm going with Rob if he accepts to. But the dealer is off my list. Just didn't see enough reasons to favour them over any other tinters.

Just heard back from Rob. This was his response.

I have to remember back to when I did Amy's and then I can recall how much I gritted my teeth over it.

These little VW's aren't nice to do as they have a horribly curved rear screen like a banana which is near on impossible to get on in one piece even with heat shrinking the film to its physical limits.
Big stress on the adhesive doing that and the front door design makes it really hard to get into the leading edges of the window frame -- I'll give it a miss this time around.
Now I don't know what to do. If person like Rob who has had so much experience in tinting doesn't want to touch it, there's no way in hell I'm going to let some apprentice anywhere near my car. And not only am I not happy with the bluish hue tint that VW are offering, their price is ridiculous.

I'm not going to rush into anything. I was more than happy for Rob to do it, no matter what his price. But I can't force him. Looks like I'm just gonna have to leave it as is.

                            Thanks anyway Amy!

Well, Rob beat me to it!

My back window tint ended up in three strips due to the massive curvature, whilst the rounded corner covers at the tops of the doors caused him some hassle as well. As I also didn't want the trim removed (due to too many dramas in the past with rattles) he couldn't get the tint completely to the corners of the glass. It's hidden by the pillars, but you can see a small strip of untinted glass from within the Pogo.

Good luck guys - hopefully you can still find somebody who gives a damn like Rob does.

                              Cheers!
