  • 06 Polo GTI vs Mk4 Golf GTI

    Hey,
In terms of driving, power, handling etc... how does a 2005-06 Polo GTI compare to a Mk4 (2000-04) Golf GTI?

Any comments to help me decide which one to go for is much appreciated.

    Cheers
    Mitch

obviously the engine is the same in both, but with the polo being lighter, it is of course quicker. i believe the golf has a wider stance which would mean better handling, however, i'm pretty sure we have an upgraded stiffer suspension than the mkIV golf gti, giving us the advantage in cornering. is there anyone close by to you with both in standard form so you can test out??

I'd go the Polo purely because of the price/age thing. You'll get one with less ks and newer for the same price I'd expect.

it all depends how keen you are on the phat look of the mk4, if you wanna make a mean looking car buy the mk4, but if ya dont care to much for that i would buy the polo, for lower kms/age of car, but i must say i have never seen a phat looking polo, so it depends what look you want....mk4 ftw lol

I'm more surprised you don't suggest a VL.

Depends on the Mk IV, but all lack the drive-by-wire of the Polo and I think the early models in the series lack variable valve timing. Apart from that, the Mk IV is heavier.

I got the Mk4 because I found i to be a better all rounder. The build quality and feel of the Mk4 was far superior, but the Mk4 GTI was targeted more as a luxury hatch than a sports hatch. It still has the same platform but minus DBW and a slightly smaller turbo. But = all Mk4's came with sun roof and earlier ones came with realy nice recaros.

The polo represents great value and is quicker in standard trim with a more refined version of the 1.8T and larger turbo (K03s vs K03). The interior I found to be very plastic and the general feel was more flimsy than the Mk4.

Last but not least - I love the look of the Mk4 and always have. The polo isn't ungly - but there is just something about a mk4's fatness that I love. I've also had great fun turning my Mk4 into a real weapon with the extra money I save from buying the polo.

I would say the COMPLETE opposite. The build quality in the Polo is better than my dad's 2006 A4, and in turn, the Mk4.

How is the A4 like the Mk4? The A4's are completly different? To be more specific I was refering to the fit and finishe of the interior compnents and the plastics and fixtures used.

It's a 70k car rather than a 40k car. I'm saying the Polo is built as good as any car I've been in. It feels more solid.

                        I was too.

I'd sugest a direct comparison to you then. I'm not familiar with the A4, but there is a big difference between my interior and that in the polo. That comment was even echo'd by some of the polo guys from vic at one of our GTG's down there. Again - this is something that's open to interpretation, but I felt strongly enough inclined one way for it to be a major deciding factor between deciding between the two.
