Hey - I know this has been done to death but I just wanted some opinions on what gearbox oil to use for my Polo GTI and my 02A TDI gearbox (CTN code) that will be mated to my 1.8T MK1 Cabby.
I would like to assume that I can buy a gallon drum of something like Redline MTL and it would work really well for both but when I searched on Vortex there were people saying that Redline isn't great in 02As - but I know a lot of the Polo guys swear by it in their 02Rs.
Are there any other really popular choices suited to the Australian climate (i.e. only a few weeks of cold weather.) that would be great for both boxes - it just makes sense to buy a Gallon drum and do both rather than pay smaller bottles + shipping or whatever.
My Polo is still on factory oil after 142k - I've driven it through 3 winters and that's the only time it struggles - it'll grind on pretty much the first shift into 3rd when you drive it on winter mornings - 4-5 degrees ambient. The rest of the year it's fine - I'm just trying to kill 2 birds with one stone before winter hits again and I need to lube up this new box for my cabby.
This is what I'm looking at - Redline MTL Gear OIL 1 Gallon Bottle | eBay $45 for each box should be perfect - Apparently my CTN box is listed as 2.2l capacity and the 02Js are 2.0l.
