where to get an exhaust upgrade in Melbourne?

Hey everyone,

Just purchased my polo gti 9n and am keen to upgrade the exhaust. Im not really looking to gain power but rather get a nicer note out of the system.

In other words a cat back is probably more what im after and i was wondering if anyone knew of any places in Melbourne that could whip one up for me on the cheap. Doesnt have to be anything fancy like stainless steal.

Im also going to get the APR stage one tune some time soon and was wondering if I should up grade the exhaust before or after upgrading the ECU? I understand that there may be certain software changes required when changing to a bigger system?

Any help and advice that anyone could give would be much appreciated, thanks!

You should have a good read back through the 9N section, there's loads of information on tuning Polo's in there.

There's plenty of tunes available for the Polo outside of APR some of which would leave you spare cash for mods. I'd spend money on a downpipe before buying a cat back. Polo's I have tuned sound really well with a DP and std cat back.

Im still familiarizing myself with the forum, its a bit of a labyrinth! There is def a bit of stuff on exhausts but nothing specifically for where to find a cheap one in melbourne.

I hadn't considered just changing the dump pipe, that might even be cheaper? Do you know if its a bolt on part and whether or not you have to change any programing? or would it be wise to get a professional to do it? Thanks again mate!

The downpipe is bolt on. There is no point at all getting one, in my opinion, unless you have the ECU tuned to advantage of the higher flow.

They often recognise the high flow cats and put up a check light for that. Custom-Code tunes switch that off. We also have versions, that would allow you to delete the secondary air pump if that has failed. They sometimes get full of condensation and make awful noises when the combi valve falls over.

Most exhaust shops worth their salt should be able to fab a downpipe. I wouldn't bother with stainless, no one is going to see it. Mine is coated mild steel and has stood up to 2 years hard use without any drama.

I prefer 3 inch diameter personally but 2.5 is ok. You should have a flex section in it and change out the stock dogbone insert for something a bit stiffer.

More food for thought. Im definitely not fussed if its made out of mild steal or whatever. So what system do you have on yours exactly and how loud would you rate it out of 10? If its ok to ask as well, how many $ did you part with after labor, or did you do it yourself??

You'll have to ask my neighbours I don't mind it, it's not factory quiet. That's the beauty of keeping the std system. Mine was made by a local exhaust shop. So the prices vary wildly. 2 years ago it was $1100.
