Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • No camber adjustment

    In the process of getting some new tyres and the guy at the tyre shop told me the Polo's don't have a camber adjustment. This explains why I am churning through the tyres. Is this true and if so, is there a kit I can install and how much?

    Check the alignment before blaming camber, I have runs lots of camber on mk1s back in the day and never lost tyres to it.

    The Polo doesn't have adjustment and neither do most VWs these days. Unless you bent something it should be in limits.

    CAmber plates are available but there's no need for them IMO.

        I did do, on my MK1 Golf GTIs. Unless your Polo is bent, there will be negligible camber. I bet the toe is out or you drive around lots of tight corners in the same direction, all the time. Like the South Bank underground car park is spotted you parked in the other week maybe.

        Our i30 wagen is on it's 3rd set of front tyres in 30k after driving around airside at the airport.

            Could be your toe-in. Especially if the bushes in the LCA are rooted.

              You can tell what's causing it by how the tyre is wearing.
              As above, poor alignment will cause it before camber does
              Bora gone

                The polo sits pretty upright on its tyres, so has bugger all camber to be blamed. The only way to add camber to the front is adjustable strut tops. Unless you want camber, this isn't the approach to take. Is it the inside of the tyre wearing? if so, as said above, it'll caused by toe in.

                Where is the wear on the tyres and how many km's you getting? I typically drive gently on the street but reasonably regular track days and still get 25-30,000km from a set of tyres. If you have the alignment specs, I'd be happy to find my recent one for comparison.

                  The wear is on the inside front. Not too sure how many kms but no where near 20,000 kms. I haven't had it aligned recently but I will
                  once I get the new tyres on Monday. Thanks for the advice. Keep in mind I am going on what the guy from the tyre shop told me about the camber. I can see the wear on the tyre but not sure what to look for to fix it other than that.

                    Hoyhoy.

                    O.K. If you have the same amount of wear on the inside of both front tyres you won't have too worry much about the camber settings.
                    Just check the toe alignment which should be about 2mm (total) toe in for general street purpose.
                    But if you have more wear on one tyre ya better get the camber checked, because the camber can be adjusted, but not to gain camber only to equalise the differences from side to the other.
                    Subframe movement (a long story on its own) can cause this to happen.
                    Now a lot of wheel aligners won't know how to do this.
                    Seeing that ya live in Brissy have a read of this shortcut below for several post down, I don't know if they are still around.

                        The alignment was way out. Hopefully all is good and the tyres last a lot longer now.
