  • EPC light + loss of power

Driving to work this morning and the EPC light and ESP light came on and the car lost power - wouldn't accelerate much at all. Had to pull over on the side of the highway. Popped the hood and the engine was shuddering pretty badly and nearly stalling. Tried to drive it again and it would barely accelerate. Turned it off for a minute and then back on again (no EPC or ESP light) and all was ok - car drove fine all the way to work (20km+).

I'm seeing Gav on Thursday for stage 2 tune so can check the codes and see what was up but hopefully it's nothing too serious! I did read about the brake light switch causing this problem too: http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...fix-57882.html (I did notice a slight squeak in the brake pedal over the past few weeks).

The car had sat outside in the rain for the past few days without being driven - not sure if that has anything to do with it (knowing VW electrics!!). Hopefully doesn't affect plans for stage 2 and Lakeside this weekend

A few times I've heard it was either issues with the Alternator or battery cables. Check your battery / earthing cables.

If it is running rough it may be a spark plug or coil pack. You need someone to read the error code to help identify your issue.

I did have some issues a few months ago related to earthing issues - I'll check the battery too.

Hopefully a scan will reveal what the issue is.

I put fresh plugs in about 2 months ago - so not too sure if that would be the issue. But as you mention, a scan is the best option. Will see Gav this week.

Not sure if this would help, but I had a similar situation. Traction control went off and ABS was off, lack of power and then the car stalled. Turns out the cables entering the terminal above the battery was slightly loose, resulting in a dodgy connection. Tighten it and see if it is good to go.

Fatigued strip fuses can cause it amongst many things, Scan can "possibly" give you a starting point.

Thanks for the info Jmac. Will see what the scan reveals Thursday and will check fuses and earth points. If there's no luck with that I think I better come and see you for help!
