  • No BS LSD planning

So, the missus is due for ankle surgery in a month and will spend the best part of two months hobbling around with a cast on her right foot. Silver lining, I get the adult car for a month and the Polo can sit inside on jack stands for the same. So here's a rough plan of attack. Because I'm a sucker for forgetting minor things... (like bearings) I've taken the unprecedented step of exposing my poor planning to the forum so you can tell me where I'm planning a disaster. The whole point is to remain stress free and minimise the missus yelling about 'how much more is this going to cost' etc.

    In preparation:
Do final rolling second gear single wheel burnout

    order the following:
    suitable replacement clutch
    clutch installation kit
    transmission fluid
Diff ring gear bolts? ARP Kit?
    Diff bearings (all from ECS?)

Car on stands, tear gearbox out, smash knuckles and bust back

Dismantle gearbox assess ring gear size
    Order Diff centre
Technically inspect gearbox components for potential replacement including shift components (currently feel a little loose in the hand on engine bay side)

    Whilst waiting for diff centre:
    Clean up gearbox and parts
    Install clutch kit
    Modify selectors
    Install new diff main bearings

    After centre turns up:
Reassemble diff centre on new bolts
    Set diff clearances etc...
    Gearbox back together, fluid in.
Put car back together smash all remaining knuckles, undo physio's good work with back

So... See any major gaps? Suggestions of to dos at the same time?

    Pete

Following with great interest. Can you add pictures of the progress? Would like to put an LSD in my car, likely to go with wavetrac and find someone else to do the job.

Good luck, not easy getting those rivets from the original diff. Other than that its rather straight forward

You usually get them out with an air chisel.

Worst case, machine the heads off.

I am assuming you have the right gear to set the pinion bearing pretension and check the backlash on the crown wheel. I replaced the open centre on my Ford 9" with a locking centre. Take your time and it should be good. I wish I had my four poster when I did it though.

Yeah that's what we did, still wasn't easy, took couple of hours to get them all out

I'm not above letting you help me!

Good advice on bolts/kit. The diff will be a torque biasing design. Brand will be decided upon based on cost and availability. Pulling the box needs to come first to determine ring gear size. I'm guessing 114mm based on car age. Quaife 114mm diff centres are cheap at ECS at the moment. I'd certainly look at buying domestically. Though cost isn't the only factor to consider.

I'm bad at taking photos. I'll do my best. Self install is an option for me but it's a fair chunk to bite off, and without a second car to get around in, I can understand it being too much for the average punter.

Backlash will be a new experience but I'm not hesitating, yet. Care to elaborate?

As for getting the rivet heads off, I was going to do this at work. I have enough gear there to do the job effectively.

assuming it's the 114mm plate, what's the correct part number, or link to ECS diff you're expecting? Just having a look myself and left a little/lot confused on what's what.

                        ECS 1.8T Quaife

Sadly, Quaife don't seem to make a diff centre for the newer 02J boxes with the 113mm ring gear.

Can't imagine it'd be too hard to mod the ring gear out to 114mm in a cnc shop... But Im frequently wrong!

I'd be reluctant to do this due to the shock loadings that go through the diff.
So let us know how it goes
