Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Thanks Sean. Light appeared on the way home so wish it happened while I was there! Just confirming that this is the check engine light (pic borrowed from google):

The manual says this is the "exhaust gas warning light"?

Yeh it's the check engine light. No idea why it's called that in the book.

Buy a obd2 Bluetooth bit and torque app. Run checks in the go. Makes it super easy. Well it did for me atleast.

Ok cool - I was using the erwin manual (download from VW) - maybe its different.

I'll try and catch Sean this week to make sure it's nothing more sinister - but you're right, time to get something I can use to check it out.

I saw that you are going to run phase 2 down the track, but curious are you phase 1 at the moment with those exhaust mods or standard tune? Does the exhaust use an angled spacer for the rear O2 sensor or a standard fitting?

I'm standard tune at the moment and no angled spacer.

Why would you use an angled fitting anyway

The angled spacer creates a standoff for the rear O2 sensor so that it only sees a small portion of the real exhaust flow. It is basically a hardware mod that makes the rear O2 sensor/ECU think it is seeing the same exhaust flow with a high flow cat installed that it saw previously with a standard low flow cat.

On a standard car with a high flow exhaust and no angled spacer, the rear o2 sensor will basically see huge exhaust flow compared to what the ECU expects to see. ie. out of range readings. The ECU will assume an exhaust malfunction and trigger the warning light.

The spacer is needed if you have a standard ECU or a tune that hasn't had the exhaust warning ticked off.

A tune written to prevent the CEL is guaranteed to work and may also have more appropriate fueling/timing to go with the exhaust. Using a spacer is is less certain to prevent the CEL.

I did read something along those lines sambb. As I was going to get the tune I wasn't too worried about the light coming on (exhaust guy confirmed it would more than likely happen as well).

I know its an old thread, but I'm also in Brisbane and keen to get my downpipe done as well... can I ask roughly how much you paid Paazazu? (Or anyone else who feels like chiming in).

I think it was about $900 all up (downpipe + Xforce euro 4 200 cell cat) - quality and workmanship was top notch. Steve @ Valley Mufflers Valley Mufflers - Brisbane's permier exhaust fitters for mufflers, catalytic converters, tow bars, and extractors

Sounds good. Cheers mate. It's good to get a recommendation for a place where you know they've done the job before.

If anyone is interested, I'm flirting with the idea of parting out my polo which would mean the full exhaust system would be up for grabs. Included would be an APR downpipe with O2 sensor spacer and an X-force rear muffler. PM's are welcome should one of the polo guys be interested.

Not interested in the exhaust but certainly interested in bits you may want to part with.
