Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Polo Questions - Brakes, Suspension, Audio, Wheels

Hey, going through the numerous websites looking at varying suspension and brake sets most seem to be for the GTI. I have 2007 Polo Match and was wondering if i got one of these kits if it would work, is there anything stopping me from putting GTI or aftermarket suspension and brakes on my polo.

Secondly i am installing 17inch r32 alloys and wasn't sure how much i should lower it. I have seen kits for 30 and 55mm and wasn't sure of the brand either, was specifically looking at some H & R's.

Thirdly im putting in Alpine sound system and just wanted to confirm that the speakers are 6 1/2 inch in the doors? I also carnt seem to find anywhere how deep the cavities are, cause the type r's tend to be rather deep compared with others.

    Thanks

    howdy

Im not sure as to the suspension or wheels so ill leave that to those that know.

With the speakers though, you will probably have them mounted on 16mm mdf spacers. With mine, i couldnt fit 6.5 oz matrix even with two spacers as it intruded into the space used by the window when fully down. You can mount them flat with a max of 2 spacers. Another on top and you will start running the risk of the speaker hitting the door trim.

There is plenty of options out there if they dont fit. Check out the polk sr6500 as they are shallow mount so you could get some angle happening too.

I believe the brakes from a GTI won't go on a normal Polo as the Polo is 5 bolt (not 4 like other Polos). Same thing with the wheels from R32.

Suspension shouldn't be a problem, should be able to put any suspension made for Polos on it.

I have type X in mine. So i dont think you need to worry about type r.

Thanks. How much did you pay for the type x. I was looking at them but wasn't sure if extra expense was worth it. Also do you know how easy it is for them to put speakers in the back? There is spaces for them but not sure about wiring ect.

Yeah i was wondering about that, suppose ill have to look around for some similar ones, i just love the r32 ones. Are there many options otherwise for brakes.

There definitely would be, just not the same ones us with the GTI can go for. You might be best asking in the Golf forums (the 4 cylinder Golfs between 85 and 98 should have the same stud pattern) as no doubt many of them have wanted to do those same brake/wheel upgrades.

Can we get a little clarification on what the stud pattern is on the Polo GTI? I've been told both 5x112 and 5x100. The Polo Match is 5x100 as my mates has VR6 BBS wheels on it and we also tried a set of non-GTI 2001 Golf wheels on as well.

He's also got a set of 6.5" Focal's in the front doors measuring 72mm deep with 16mm spacers, for you reference. Be aware that fitting large tweeters in the factory A pillar position can be difficult.

The Polo GTI is 5x100 33mm offset, where as the Golf GTI is 5x112(I believe).

yeah the wheels i was looking at were 5x112 and the polo match is 5x100. Dont really know that much about the wheels so im assuming the 100 and 112 difference means they wont work at all?

Yeah, they won't same with brakes. You can get adapters but they cost a fair bit, better to find replica wheels or something.

yeah these were replicas from tempe. How much are these adapters, cause those wheels are just soo nice.

Thanks with help so far as well, much appreciated. Got big plans for my little polo

I'm no great expert on the Polo as yet, but from my investigation so far the GTI shares the same wheel & hub sizes etc as the rest of the Polo line, so hardware designed for the GTI should fit on the other models with no problems.

I'm hoping gratuitous self-plugging isn't frowned upon too heavily around here, but if you do decide to go down the path of fitting the GTI brakes I've got a set of front hardware (rotors, calipers & pads) that just came off my GTI when they were replaced with Brembos. Had about 2000kms on them before being swapped - thread is here.

How much of an improvement over the standard polo's brakes are the GTI's. I am rather interested in them if its a reasonable improvement.

Also i have been looking around at wheel adapters for 5x100 to 5x112 and have come across these.

Im not sure which is meant by the 20mm offset, as they also come in 22, 23 and 25mm versions. Is this similar to spaces? Would spacers be required if i put 17 inch wheels on my polo if the width is tyre width is either 205 or 215
