  • Timing belt has gone.. what would you do?

    Hi guys,

Been a long time since I've posted here but have a question.

Basically have a 2007 Polo Gti with 150,000kms, having driven it since new.

Being a company car you would think maintenance would be done such as timing belt at 90,000km etc.. well it wasn't and therefore I now have a car sitting at work with quite possibly a seized engine. I've had a mechanic come out and look at it and said while it doesn't look like the belt has snapped, it may have slipped and therefore we might have bent cylinders/rods etc

At the moment I am driving a different work car however the boss has asked what it would take to fix it. I'm thinking $3.5k+? Basically where would I go from here? Do I get a wrecked polo gti (is there any out there?) and get a shop to transplant the engine etc?

Just after some thoughts on this, yep stupid situation to be in but can't be helped and I now drive a better company car.

    Any help appreciated.

Hi Mate tough break. Have you ever looked at my cheapy thread in the Polo section? I lost a heap of teeth off my belt with 140k on it. It only took out a couple of valves, I was at idle when it happened though. I then drove through the intersection with the starter motor.

If you need a head, there's a fella in Melbourne with one. Check the classifieds.

If it's just valves, I can send you a few exhaust ones, which is what it will be.

then you need a timing belt kit, headgasket kit, head bolts and some coolant. The valves need fitting by an engine builders really. Although if you are handy it's not that hard.

Not much chance of the rods being bent, although I have 2 sets of them if you want any.

If you fancy a chat, my number is 0424 three two 5 five nine 2. I am at work now and it's as good a time as any to talk.

    Gavin

Worth removing the valve cover, turning it over, and seeing if both cams move.

These, and FSI/TFSI 2.0s have the intake cam chain-driven off the exhaust cam. I've seen a few where dowel pins on the gears have sheared off, and so on.

Yeah, definitely worth investigating the full problem. I took my took cover off the belt and rocking it in gear could see the cam wasn't moving and the alternator was.

Could be just 2 valves and the stuff to install them.

Safer with head, what if the guides are damaged? Most likely tore teeth off. Its horrible to hear these stories. Majority of us are not upselling for the work , but genuinely trying to avoid this. I agree poor show with the servicing, agree that you would have thought the belt would have been taken care of. Bloody shame.
          Hope its not too painful
