  • CV Boots

Noticed a bit of grease on the inside of my LH front wheel, checked it out and my CV boot is split. Are the boots a pain in the ass to do? And can anyone recommend somewhere to get a GOOD replacement.

    Cheers,
    Chris

Imparts should be able to do that for you.

You need to define pain in the arse though. I am not a fan but it's not a big deal. You can do it with the driveshaft still connected to the gearbox or take the lot out of the car.

I try in the car first, undoing the hub nut can be a tough job otherwise not such a big deal.

Not hard at all to do, just really messy so make sure you use gloves and have rags handy, sometimes you can just buy a whole shaft and it ends up being a better option after accounting for labour/ if you try and do it yourself and decide it's not worth it.

Australians seem keen to change the whole lot out. I certainly don't see that as good value, especially if you are doing it yourself. Maybe I am just too old or something? $40-50 for a pair of boots and 30 mins extra time to change them over a new driveshaft fit.

I might consider it for a worn joint but if you catch them soon enough, no reason why it would be damaged.

I guess the disposable society rules in the 21st century?

Yeah I'm with you on that one Gav. I'm guessing its only been like that for a week or so. Will see how thr joint looks when I get the car up later today. Is the hub nut a specialized tool?

Turned out being a 36mm multi hex. Boot itself wasnt damaged, the metal clamp had disappeared!

Chris that a good find, did you just replace the clamp on it then?

I am getting a different sound on turn in left and right but thought it was tyre noise. Maybe CV joints?? Could try jacking it up and running the tranmission in the air and turn left & right?
                  Cheers Al

Yeah I just replaced the clamp "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" depends on the noise Al, cv's make a very distinguishable clicking noise

Ah of course, the 9N has a special nut which is 36mm and MUST be renewed after removal, you would have seen the lock tabs on the nut? and there is a special torque procedure for it, if you haven't be a good idea you buy a new nut mate.

Yeah, the boot kit came with a new lock nut, however I haven't put the nut on yet as I haven't been able to find any documentation on the torquing procedure (I'm guessing it's something along the lines of XX Nm and 45 degrees??)
