lack of grip

Today I got the opportunity to try my car though corners at higher speeds than are allowed on the road.

Generally the car did quite well, but i wasnt inspired by the lack of grip my tyres seem to have at these speeds (corners at maybe 120 or soo.)
As a result my car would veer a bit wider than i would have liked (and the back of my pants)

For those of you who do alot of track days, is this normal for the polo to feel this way?

I have upgraded the suspension soo that shouldnt be the weak link ?
front/rear swaybars
eibach pro kit springs
front upper strut brace.

On the road it feels incredibly well tied down, but at these higher speeds (say 120>160) it felt a bit squirmy.

Tyres on my stocko 16's are dunlop sp sport maxx.

Going to upgrade to 17's, hopefully it might give the car a wider footprint.

17s will make a big difference, but not because of the wider footprint - Because they have smaller, stiffer sidewalls so the car will roll less.

Also - What tyre pressures are you running?

And when you say pro kit springs is that just a set of springs on the standard shocks or a matched spring and shock combo?

ie - Running lower, stiffer springs on the standard shocks is iffy - You'll want shocks with the damper / rebound to suit the springs.

Are your swaybars adjustable? Maybe your front end with the sway/strut braces is too stiff compared to the rear?

Or the car could be setup perfectly and maybe your expectations are too high? If you're trying to accelerate out of corners too quickly a fwd car with alot of torque and no lsd is always going to run wide

PS. Check out Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3s - IMO they're slightly better than all the tyres you've suggested.

I've not cornered anywhere near that speed, but my Michelin PP2s have been awesome.

That's on 17s too.

I don't have any issues cornering like that, but then I've still got the stock SC2's on. I run the fronts at 41 and the backs at 36-38 or so if I plan for a day along the great ocean road or something similar. I found that the middle of my tyre wasn't wearing as fast as the edges at 38psi on the front and it would squirm badly.

The conti's don't like hard braking and slight cornering from those speeds though.

if you are talking about the Toyo Proxes T1-R's, i have them with 17's and i cant wait til they are worn down and can get some other tyres. i even get understeer taking the straight ahead exit (2nd exit) on a roundabout. take my advice from experience with them. wet weather = 'don't even think about it' traction, dry weather = 'don't push me or i'll spin.....even all through 2nd gear' traction...

After the VAG MS trackday at Wakefield, I haven't had the problem you're talking about. I drive Wakey with ESP off, I've had my Michelin PP2's for 2000-3000km now. Can I ask what kind of corners other then a track can you take at 120km? What kinda conditions was it? bumpy? sandy? Were your tyres cold?
