GTI 9N3 Feature on Might Car Mods

Crap taste in cars? Hardly. Have driven hundreds... Also I don't think the polo is a bad car, it feel like lots of other modern VWs do which isn't my personal preference

Polo is a good car just don't have the local support to mod it cost effectively

The show is sponsored but not to the point where we can just throw big money at tuning a polo, it's a LOT more expensive on euro cars in Aus in my opinion..

Hey dude. Cheers for chiming in .

Hope you can at least flash tune it before it goes. The guys on here have found some ways to save $$ on things like FMIC, down pipes, brake upgrades etc but that said there's far less budget options than for a japanese car in oz.

Here is an older video that my nephew put on you-tube for me, I've tried to put stuff on there, gave up on trying. ( Too old for modern technology)

The Little Blue Girl (Polo 9N3) can hold its own.
Last year @ the VW Nats against Golfs of all sorts including some big HP ones & plenty of others.
She just happened to be the fastest Watercooled & the fastest street registered VW of the day.

This little girls vehicle has got balls, even with an old Prick behind the wheel, she does quite well.

But being the typical female, she does cranky @ times.

Yup, can't argue with personal taste. Horses for courses and the main reason I'm no in a jap 2-door is I need roof racks and refuse to pay the ridiculous insurance premiums, so ruled em out.

Re cost effective mods, I was of the same opinion when I bought the car and did an initial budget, though utilising the knowledge here has meant that mod costs have been comparable to my old subaru. The areas where you can't control cost are things like brake rotors and exhaust components, as they just never go on sale given the small market compared to the japanese and aussie cars.

To say it's a LOT more expensive, I'd politely suggest you're looking under the wrong tree's.

I think you've nailed it with the 'small market' bit... i'm particularly fond of pulling cars apart myself, but the lack of easily accessible spares, there's much more likelyhood of having your car in bits with parts on the way from overseas or hunting down parts. Also wreckers seem to load up prices more too. None of this is new with owning a Euro of course.

We've had good luck getting parts from manufacturers to use on the show, but with the VW only international companies were willing to help because they have the market to support it. The show is a hobby firstly so i'm not going to push through with a car that doesn't give me the tickle, its just too expensive!

With a budget to throw whatever money necessary at it, i'd LOVE to have a polo like the one above, smashing everyone around a track.. there's great potential in them, it just can't be extracted cost effectively by the everyman.

I'm with Sean. When hunting for a new car I looked at a heap of Jap options. Some popular and some not so popular V's the Polo and Golf. And even looking at the expensive top end of Euro mods at that time it still worked out to be way cheaper then modding a Jap example.

But as Sean said if you use this section of the forum to get the right mods from the right people you can get massive gains for next to nothing. Example to go to true Stage 2 you would only need a FMIC $800 max, and Custom Tune $1000 max mated with your already installed exhaust. On a mainline hub dyno the polo has 95kW and 200Nm atw and with the above upgrade combo we saw (same day, same dyno) 156kW and 360Nm.

That's a 64% increase in power and a whopping 80% increase in torque. Please show me another car that will give you those gains for this outlay???

I get what your saying about spares also but hardly anything goes wrong with these cars, honestly! I would love for you to take up Noone's (Ben) offer to drive is Stage 2 Custom Code Polo before you sell. At least just so you know the rush of 360Nm atw by 3000rpm so you don't think it's so ho-hum.

that comes down to what your idea of 'cheap' is..

a FMIC for my subaru was $280 and i welded it together myself, FMIC for the MX5 was basically free using 2nd hand spare parts.. of course having 'hookups' helps in this area is a big one.

I looked around for someone to 'tune' the Polo, but no one i could find who was local does it with a dyno and actually customises anything, i'm not a huge fan of 'stage 1,2,3' tunes where the ecu is just flashed and plugged back in

i realise there are safe limits of what boost and timing the motor can take, but i much prefer to see it on a graph, live..

                    personal preference!

Yeah, it's a very different scene, cost about a grand for dyno tune.

I understand about the stages being less appealing, I don't personally agree with this method across the board, but the 1.8T is very systematic and with the plethora of sensors, can work well (ie Custom Code).

Still open to a spin in mine if you're interested.

Love your work, hope the brand continues to grow.

Brilliant stuff Eddy! Absolutely flying mate. Did I see right, only two gear changes?? Totally different to Lakeside in that respect, but looks quicker and more fun than QR.

Hey did you get to test your EGT's after the porting and ceramic coating? If so much difference?

                        Cheers!

                          Hoyhoy.

Most of the time I only do two changes, use to do more, but is a waste with the torque of the Pog.
On three of the shorter straights I do stretch the tacho a fair bit, thinking that might change with the mods to get the intake temp down.
Anthony the Pog hasn't been out of the shed since last year, nearly got it back together, plenty of changes have been made.
Have a Scan-gauge for future intake temps, used some other gadget my nephew had last time.
I still like Waky for the safety factor as well that's its a fun track.

Cheers for speaking up Marty, I vote for MCM/VWWC Euro special, I'm sure a stack of people here would put their hands/cars up to be a part of it..

all the best with the show!

The 1.8T has been around since 1997 in various forms, so there's not too much left to learn about the tuning of them. Certainly true with standard turbos.

As you have pointed out there's few tuners, that specialise in them in Australia and have the capability to dyno tune.. So you have to go with what's available, there's plenty of tunes to chose from. Some offer trials of the software, that would have been worth checking out I reckon.

I believe that you could get within a few percent of the available power in a 1.8T with a staged tune. You were talking about Euro's being expensive but live tuning wouldn't realise a great deal extra power, if any, for the extra cost. Not talking fully loaded APR as the comparison.

I think it's a bit sad that you weren't inspired to carry on with the Polo, after piling some hard earned into it.

I have a Phase 1 ECU coming to Sydney shortly. If you fancy trying it, just ask.
