Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Hey, Have any of you guys changed the standard stereo head unit? I'm looking at putting in a Kenwood double din screen unit, but I was wondering if there was any special considerations that I should know about if I was to get it done?

Thanks guys for the feedback...I was worried about the CBUS cabling, but if that dosn't have to be touched, thats awesome.

I've been there with a full stereo install before in the Polo. One thing I must point out is that a Japanese double din isnt a European double din. Per say, if this is going into a 9N Polo, then you fill find a small gap between the centre console/air con module, and your head unit. The gap isnt evident but it's there.

To help minimise this, you can spray the headunit's sleeve a matt black on the outter lip. This helps to conceal the metal that is sometimes visible.

Also ensure that your headunit isnt too long. For instance, I've previously had a JVC AVX1 headunit and an Eclipse CD-5444 installed in mine and both were reasonably long headunits and at times didnt fit properly (until proper force was used).

Removal of the stock headunit is simple - just use 4 of those Kenwood 'keys' that are supplied to remove your Kenwood headunit. Slide them into the blank slots and you're on your way (this applies only to a 9N3). If you're removing the headunit off a 9N2 (which I've done before for a friend), is a bit different. Remove the lower pocket first and you should be able to slightly jimmy out the stock headunit.

Last but not least - make sure you secure the leads from your new headunit to the stock vehicle cluster.

Hope this helps and good luck.
