    Hi guys/gals. First time poster, long time lurker.

    I'm looking to purchasing a GTi in about 2-3 months and plan on keeping the car for 5 years or more. But I have been told by a few of my dads mates that I will be looking at alot of $$ to keep the car on the road after 100,000klm's.

    I am a single dad and don't flog my cars (much) and mainly do highway driving. Are these 'rumours' worth worrying about?

    I currently have a '98 SSS pulsar and have had it for 6 years still going strong without much $$ poured into it and would like a similiar experience with the polo.

    I really have my mind set on getting the GTi but just wanted some reasurrance

    We have only had our 1.4L auto Polo a couple of months, so I can't comment on that.

    I have heard that said about Volkswagens in general.

    Our other VW is a T4 Transporter, 2L Man which has covered 146,000Km. It is still 100% reliable, and has not let us down once.

    If you are going to keep the Polo fro a long time, but as new as you can afford. Sevice as per schedule every 15K, change the oil & filter every 7,000km, and use the best products you can afford. I would expect you will have many years of happy motoring.

      i'm in the same position mate. been working 7 days a week over this uni break so i have the money for the polo. will be good to hear everyones opinions

        Thanks for the response Maris. I plan to buy brand new and will be definitely be taking care of this car like I have my pulsar.

        I have looked at all the other cars in this price range and for the $$ the polo seems like a great little car. I couldn't stand being stuck with a slow corolla (and the rest) for 5+ years. And the ability to chip the polo later on is a great plus.

            I am about 6' 3" tall, and I have heaps of room in the Polo. It is a great car.

              Beats me how anyone can say how much they'll cost to run after 100k as no one yet has got that far[As far as I know]
              Floody has done 70-80k in his[+track days],I'm up to 40k[+track days] and so far all is good.
              The basic powertrain has been around for years in Golfs and Audis,with no real problems.
              Typical armchair experts with no facts/experience to back it up other than what someone at the pub told them one night about someone else's car.....
              If you buy a Polo GTI new,service it properly,and drive it intelligently,I think you'll get years of economical and enjoyable motoring.

                Thanks MACCAA I figured as much. Just wanted to hear some first hand experience from you guys.

                I am heading down to a VW dealer this week to go for a test drive, I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

                  Macaa is right ... this model GTI hasn't been out long enough for that history to be experienced yet. My thoughts are, after owning one for 2 years (24,000kms) that it is of a much higher finish quality than any Toyota, Ford, Mitsubishi, Nissan or Honda that I have owned in the past (and yes ... I have owned all of the above from new).

                  That said ... I think (as with any brand) quality will vary ... to a point and there have been some on this forum who have experienced problems. I tend to think that most of the complaints I've read on here (apart from two major areas - gearbox and turbo bolts) have been of a very minor nature and sometimes purely the owner getting used to a different brand (ie: indicator stalk on left (Euro) as opposed to right (Jap)).

                  The Gearbox problems some have experienced have (as I understand it) all been fixed under warranty and the Turbo bolts has been an ongoing (rare) problem with this engine (traced back thru the MKIV & other VAG uses). It tends to develop more with race or heavy use of the accelerator (IMO) ... which this car seems to encourage ().

                  But generally ... even after 2 years ... there is NOTHING in the market place for similar pricing that I would even consider replacing mine with.

                          I don't own a Polo GTI, but from what I know / have read, the Polo GTI uses the same engine that was used in the Golf MKIV GTI.

                          If I'm correct, I would go on to say that it would follow the same scheduled maintenance, ie timing belt change at 100K or thereabouts.

                          Possibly check the maintenance book that comes with the car and see what is required at what interval to try and determine the future servicing costs.

                          But from your later posts, seems that you've already made up your mind.

                            Yeah i have pretty much made up my mind on getting the polo.

                            Insurance and reliability were the only things that were going to stop me from getting one. Surprisingly insurance for it is actually cheaper than my SSS pulsar! and reliability shouldn't be an issue as I intend to baby it.

                              Hey mate. I've only heard good things about the longevity of the veedub drivetrains.

                              I believe the harding performance TT had >200,000 km on it when they bought it, and then they modded the living daylights out of it and flogged it quite reliably.

                              I'm sure there's a mechanic or two lurking around here who can give you some more feedback on how they hold up past 100,000 k's.
