  • Changing seats with airbags

A likely passing thought about changing the front seats for something with more support (and lighter).

As stock seats have airbags, would I need to do anything to stay roadworthy?

Going to need something adjustable, suitable rails / adaptors, etc.

Don't see many options for seats that flip down (to access rear seats), is this uncommon?

    Cheers

Easy to bypass the airbags , so if you are fitting seats with no airbags its easy, you will just need to check with compliance to see if you need mod plate or not roadworthy wise. Plenty out there with cobras and the likes all roadworthied, all down to the individual really if it is roadworthy already and you fit cobras for example then its up to you. Legalities and compliance not sure mate. Ive fitted plenty race seats to 996,s that were on the road through the dealership, funny thing was to do that there was a Porsche bypass harness we fitted lol.
Conclusion different seats easy its up to you with the compliance mate

Stick with a recliner, fixed backs obviously don't flip forward and can then be deemed illegal due to rear passengers having no emegerncy exit.

Resistors will fool the computer into thinking the airbag is still there, easy stuff.

Find something comfy and you'll be set. My Recaro Sportster CSs are some of the best money I've spent.

<edit> just remember that removing ANY airbag is lowering the safety standard of the vehicle and is illegal.

I'll keep an eye on the used market, but I don't think I'm going to find what I want cheap enough (new would be similar to turbo upgrade coin)

            Thanks,

Do you have a spare 5K for seats ??? They quoted me around $4500 without airbags and the seats come in black then another $2000 to trim in Grey leather

Stuwey's on the money with the air bags. Removing any standard airbag is illegal.. even swapping out a steering wheel for a nice Nardi or the like Ideally I'd go with the Recaro CS's, beautiful pew...

The new regulations introduced on first May make it difficult if the car was not available new with a non airbag option standard. Same as with roll cage installation, there are certain requirements to maintaining the factory safety systems in conjunction with modifications.

One option is have a race seat & mounts ready to bolt in for track events - switch it over & switch it back when you get back on the road.

                              RE: Changing seats with airbags

The R32 and Mk6 R came with optional sport seats that didn't have the side airbags. The computer is tricked with a bypass connector to stop the warning indicator. You could troll some of the euro wreckers for the seats and leave your details with them. Audi S3 also had a sport seat option and being the same car under the skin, it would also be a bolt in job. Having a two door makes it a bit harder to find seats but they will be out there.
