  • Uh oh. Turbo died. Someone fetch the Visa card...

So the GTI turbo died. Rather than being sad about it I'm looking forward to the opportunity to get filthy and pull the engine. As a minimum we'll be putting an LSD in, turbo back exhaust and I'll look at a FMIC - of and of course addressing some of the restrictions around the engine (exhaust manifold+tip etc). I've been looking for something to go a bit engineering nuts on and it looks like this is it. We wont discuss budget... ...where I go to the effort of fabricating something I'll post it up.

Anyone want to discuss options? There's volumes of information online but I'm concerned alot of it's rubbish. My priorities are:
    1. reliability
    2. driveability in Sydney traffic (off boost preferably - 1000 to 2-2500rpm)
    3. engine character that continues to build power to redline (unlike standard GIAC tune that seems to flat line at 4500rpm)

I think with an LSD the car should be right for 150-160kw at the treads and remain very driveable... so that's probably a good aim point. APR offer a 180kw(!) turbo kit for under $3k - that might be an option...

Welcome to my world. You'll be reading my thread again and hopefully in the next couple of weeks we'll have some numbers from Anthony's red devil.

They use ported standard manifolds in the UK a lot. All the big ones seem to crack. My ATP did on the A3 and the FT on I got off Lito has cracks and is barely a year old. I didn't look in Anthony's ATP which is ceramic coated so that may have saved it.

A bigger turbo will definitely soften the punch. Anthony's is pretty tame to drive in traffic compared to the K03.

I can see why Bill Brockbank takes the cylinder heads off Jimmy. At least you can do the pipes up easy. Probably not much longer a job when you take the struggling into account

If my FT manifold dies (also a bitch to fit, even with the engine out) It'll be a JBS going back in.

Are you playing out tomorrow night Jimmy? I will bring his turbo with me if you are.

          Try one of these:
          New Relentless
Log in to Facebook to start sharing and connecting with your friends, family and people you know.

If I ever get my car back I will let you know what the V3 relentless manifold is like.
There are a few out there and I haven't heard any bad reports yet.
Doug from Frankenturbo installed one and did a positive write up.
Gives you the opportunity to run a single pass intercooler!

In regards to your motor do the rods while you're at it.
Bolt on a Frankenturbo F23 or a Billet Turbo like Ants.

            How did it die?
A few good options floating, I'd wait to see the dyno results personally.

Likely oil starvation killed it, when it comes off I'll have a look. The Franken turbo setup looks Ok. The price helps! Where are those guys based?

Honestly I'd rather spend the extra money from a ballsy turbo build on parts that will actually make the car faster overall, and stick to the ground better where it can put down what power it does have!

Anyone got practical experience with Lsd's in the polo?

Sorry about the questions I'm asking, I'm on an intermission at the theater... yay culture!

Check posts by Eddy. He had a Peloquin TBD but much prefers the SQS Salisbury.

So, I've had a think and I figure there's three reasonable courses of action here...

                    1. Have the KO3 rebuilt in Sydney and put it back in,

                    2. Buy a Frankenturbo kit, DP and FMIC, TIP intake etc and retain GIAC tune,

                    3. As above with MAF, fuel pump/regulator, injectors and custom tune. (seems over kill)

Gotta be honest, even with the K03 there was enough torque and power to seriously motivate the little polo. I'm leaning towards option two because it will provide me what I'm after as in the OP. Reliability, consistency and hopefully shove all the way to 6000rpm.

I suppose the only real concern left is the applicability of the GIAC tune in the car. Too bad I don't live in Brisbane the solution would be pretty easy...

If you dont miss the power where it currently dies, then I'd stay with the K03. As you don't seem to mind dropping a bit of coin, why not go all out.

Rebuild will depend on how munted it is. You could send it to someone for a mini-conversion (Badger in the UK does it, not sure who else), some of the other options are quite cost effective. The mounting, small adjustments to hardware to make it fit in a very tight space and knowledge / tools / space required that puts me off. Off the shelf does not mean bolt-on.

Do you mean upgrade your tune with Giac to a stage X? You will need a new tune if you're changing MAF's, injectors. If just the K04, I've heard you can use it, but it won't work like a tune designed for that turbo.

i've been bedding in / tuning CC phase 2, just finished up today. Gav sent me his Phase 1 ECU (which was pretty good) whilst he loaded up my ECU. Adding timing revealed some issues which are now resolved, so upping the timing again.

Feel free to hit me up to see how my Polo goes with the DP, FMIC, Tip you mentioned, but with the K03 and CC
