Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Engine Warning light

    Hey peoples,

Got an engine warning light on the dash and bit of rough running, slight missing. Not sure what this means! Its due for a service very soon.... has anyone here had this warning light before?

You would need to plug it into VagCom mate to see what fault it is throwing up

No YOU don't plug it into VagCOM, your dealer does, not everyone has vagCOM just lying around. You have a warranty use it, ring your dealer and book in to get it looked at. I've had the Engine warning light come on before, but the car was running fine. Booked in to Parramatta VW and they scanned it and it had faulty Oxygen sensors. Waited weeks and weeks for them to arrive, but my car was still driving fine; yours on the other hand may be worse. Oh yeah, once they fixed one, a week later the other sensor triggered the warning light again and had to be replaced.

      Ring and book ASAP.

Sorry that did sound a bit harsh. I just don't get why you wouldn't take your car to the dealer for any warning light that comes one. If it was out of warranty yeah sure plug vagcom into it, but along with our cars we paid for warranty so we should use it.

I'm with you Fl00d-meister, but each to thier own. If you have access to Vag-com go for it... you'll only learn more about your car.

I took it to Essendon VW and they quickly checked it and found it was a sporadic error? Ahah whatever that means! Then they re-set it and the light came back on! They said it again, that it’s just a sporadic error and they will check it at the next service date it’s really nothing to worry about! .... Then I got my dad to check it who is a mechanic with 40 years experience "old school mechanic" quickly looks at it and spots out an exhaust leak and the alternator bearings aren’t good! then I took it back to Essendon VW they looked at it again and found nothing wrong with it... anyways to cut a long story short, I took it to Barloworld and got a second opinion and they said the exact same thing but the enging light kept coming on! So I organised for my dad to actualy show them exactly where the fualt was. Goes to show my dad was right! It was an exhaust leak something to do with the turbo!!! It’s all fixed now ... conclusion, don’t go to a dealer for a service/repair, because what took my dad 30 seconds to spot the problem who isn’t a vw authorised mechanic and who doesn’t need a computer to spot the problem, which takes the dealers forever a waste of my time and money! "Sporadic error" yeh right! Why are these guys so incompetent? If i had known this i would never had got a VW to begin with..lucky for me my dads a mechanic!
My car is now due for a service, any suggestions? I was thinking Volkspower Burwood they see pretty good.

WTF! That is disgraceful! Good luck with Volkspower or where ever you decide to get it serviced.

                    lol.

sporadic = intermittent / every now and then.

And even then, thats not an acceptable excuse even if it were the case (imo)

because they think that everything can be diagnosed/solved by plugging a car into a computer. dont lose faith in the dubs just yet!

Like i always say dont rely on the scanners man and Vw or not this can happen to any vehicle. A code being thrown enough to bring a light is on is generally mixture issue. I would even go to say a brake pedal switch fault. ive had that with Golfs. No code but an intermittant light. The switches are rubbish and unfortunately they use them on all of the applications. The switch itermittantly cuts off the fuel. Look sad to say a lot of the guys read for codes but dont read what is actually going on real-time. Unmetered air,too much fuel etc. Will be something simple. Have faith and like i say i can happen to any vehicle. On the VAGCOM side of things i have lots of IN warranty people coming to me. Do what you gotta do.
                            Cheers

I think that's a good example of why you shouldn't put all your faith in dealerships to diagnose problems (or fix them), and Vagcom isn't infallible either. The dealerships have a minimalist approach to diagnostics - and if the problem isn't readily and/or obviously apparant, then it's all just too hard. They won't share your determination or interest in isolating the problem, so either consult someone who will, then go back, pin-point the problem to them and demand they fix it.

The loose turbo bolts is also a good case study in the "WTF" mentality of service departments.
