Not sure if this is the forum to ask but feel free to move if necessary. I recently booked my 09 polo GTI in for its 60,000km service and i brought up with the mechanic (andrew robinson- hobart) how the log book suggested I replace the air filter and spark plugs. He then proceeded to tell me they were both 'very good' and didn't need replacing yet (i think he said the air filter was fine up until 100k)...I'm a little confused cause and want to get people's opinions on who to trust. I understand he is very experienced and has been servicing VW's since then 70's :O.. so if he is right and it means i can save some $ then happy days. Otherwise i'd be happy to hear why I should get new air filter and spark plugs.

The European service schedule is as follows:
Pollen filter
- every 30 000 km / 2 years (Polo 9N & 6R)
Air filter
- every 60 000 km / 4 years (Polo 9N)
- every 90 000 km / 6 years (Polo 6R)
Spark plugs
- every 60 000 km / 4 years (Polo 9N & 6R)
Timing belt
- every 180 000 km (Polo 9N 1.8 GTI)
The Australian service schedule has reduced change intervals for some items, but since you are no longer bound by the factory warranty, you can replace consumables based on condition if desired.
Personally, I would not go beyond the European change intervals - consider them the upper limit.
