  • Oil cooler

So, I plan on tracking my GTI a few times this year, and one thing I noticed on its' first outing was very high oil temps. 250f is not ok!

Has anyone fitted a cooler at all? Jimmy, Gavin, any experience with these? I assume a standard 13 row jobbie will be fine, but where do you get the feed from???

Any help would be much appreciated.

Not done it on a 1.8T but fitted a biggy on my G60 years ago. Kit from Mocal, using a thermostatic sandwich plate between the filter and mount.

I also removed the std cooler, major issue in the UK was that without the heat from the oil, the water temps are way down. In winter yiou had to drive with gloves on for months on end as the heater was crap.

Plus side, oil temps only 80degrees on the road, this would creep up over the course of a track day. Track sessions of 20 minutes an hour for 6 hours, so each time you went out the start temp was a bit higher. Which meant the finish temp rose accordingly. Never got to 140 degrees like I had seen previously though!

Big temps on the track would drop in just one lap once you backed off the gas.

Similar prob with a NA tarmac rally car years ago. oil temps were too high diring races. this effected the oil pressure too at WOT. I used a oil cooler then found it was too cool as gavin explained. so i tried a smaller cooler and that still was too cool. then a random 4wd'er i was having beers with suggested a remote oil reseviour in place of the cooler. effectively this increased my oil volume by a 1.5L (i was running a total of 6L) and more importantly kept the oil temp constant during races. but it did lower the oil pressure a touch. i'll try to dig up my old log book which has the data in it, but it will be a struggle cause theres been a few house moves since those days....

I even went to the trouble of covering up the radiator with cardboard and that made very little difference.

          Hoyhoy.

Me watching this one, have been thinking about it after the last trackday with track temps over 60c.
The standard gauge didn't read as high as it actually was.
Also thinking along with other changes to help reduce intake temps that I had of 80c., lost lots of mumbo on the straights.

Thermostats for remote coolers do exist... I remember suggesting to a guy that was either too hot or too cold and he was particulary cautious about anything that would restrict oil flow around the engine.

Think product page The bottom left one in this picture is what I was using on the G60. I got a couple of water pipes off a carby car to bypass the standard heat exchanger.

No flow restriction and it increases your oil capacity too by probably half a litre, depending on the size of the cooler.

I couldnt imagine a thermo switch allowing only partial oil flow. so a full flow switch would be a nice solution in the case of the gti with an oil cooler.
For those of u with fmic, it could get a little crowded in front the radiator

The sandwich plate has a thermostat in it, just like the coolant one. Oil bypasses the cooler until it gets to 80degrees.

You can make the pipes any length you want, so you would stick the cooler where the sidemount came out.

Exactly my plans, Gav. Any clues so as to where the take-offs would be on the block???

No take-offs, use the sandwich plate. You can run it with the heat exchanger if you want.
