OK, the ECS Clutch Kit arrived today so just need to put it in. How hard is this job to do? Everyone quotes in the $800-1,000 mark for the work. Does the engine need to be dropped to replace the clutch and flywheel? Does anyone have the relevant service manual section then can email me please? I've changed a clutch before just not sure how different/hard it will be on the VW.
Also, the throw out bearing that comes with the kit is 02A 141 165G, JMAC said to use a genuine one which I ordered but received a Sachs 02A 141 165M. Which one do I use, or do I need to get a VW one?
Cheers,
Scott.

If it's any help, I did a Mk3 Golf clutch with the help of 2 mates & we did it in 4 hours which included a major stoppage when we found out the drive shafts were held on with triple-square bolts. I'd never done a clutch in a FWD before but had done 20+ rear drivers & r&r'd 100+ automatics in rear drivers.
It wasn't what I'd describe as technically difficult but if I was doing it by myself I would have been reduced to tears several times.
It's nice to have moral suppport.
carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
I can't believe this - took the car to Barramundi VW Dealership to have the couch kit put in. They said to allow 4-5 hours @ $149. They called me up and said it's ready to pick up so I caught the bus in and they said sorry, we over tightened the tie rods and they snapped when we took the car off the lift!
Said they'd fix it at their cost and give me a new Polo TSI to drive around. Thank you.
I saw the car while the subframe was off and asked if they can put in my Seat bushes as it was all there ready to go.
Now it's finally ready for the second time and they say they've spent 15 hours on the car!!!!!!
Can anyone please tell me how long the flywheel/pressure plate/clutch plate/throw out bearing should have taken by the book?
Also, with the subframe already off, how long does of take to push out the bushes and put the Seat ones in?
Cheers,
Scott

I dont get it , Ive never had to pull a subframe off a fwd VW to do a clutch , Im still trying to work out why they even touched the tie rod ends !
I do pull the subframe off when I do the seat bushes as I like the check the sway bar bushes and front control arm bushes on the Polo gti's as well , they dont break like the back ones but they do wear out and start to creak over time . Oh , and I like to wash the control arms and subframe when I have it off too , but thats just me being pedantic ....

Yep i dont need the subframe out especially in a Polo, its easier than a Mk4 as it doesnt have the power steering pipes in the way, MK4 i tend to remove it as its easier one man but Polo no way. I only remove the alloy consoles to do the seat bushes, would love to see how Gav puts a solid Seat bush in the alloy housing in 30 mins per side. So thats wishbone out push out rubbish bush and fit solid seatbush, push wishbone back into the bush, torque it all up properly in 30 mins, better man than me

Ok, I've finally managed to argue with the dealership over the hours charged and they've brought it down from 15 hours to 6.3 hours. The quote was 4-5 max.
Hopefully you guys can see these photos of the clutch plate, pressure plate and flywheel - the pictures speak for themselves:

Will just clarify here that the bushes that took 30 mins to install were in fact not SEAT solid bushes. Havent seen the pics yet of the clutch will check that out for sure, but had to clarify the bush thing as i fit many and know for a fact you cant fit them in time. Sorry to change the topic but the bushes were mentioned.
Cheers
