I decided to change the oil & Filter on the Polo 1.4L today. Julia had already bought the Filter from the Volksfactory, and after much debate with myself, decided to use Shell Helix Ultra, 5W-40 oil, with Nulon Engine Treatment. Let the fun begin!
I got the Polo on the ramps, removed the sump plug (easily) and drained the (black) oil. Then I look for the filter. Mmmm, looks a tight spot. I couldn't get my hand around it to turn it, the strap oil filter remover would not go on, and even if it did, I doubt I would be able to get the drive onto it & loosen the filter. I attacked it from above!
Only a third was visible. The filter has a nut spot welded on the end. I tried an adjustable wrench - no success. Using the new filter as a guide, I used a 27mm socket on it, but couldn't get it on. After more experiments, the 30mm socket fitted. I managed to put some force onto it, but it wouldn't move. I was being ultra careful as I didn't want to "break" the filter & be stuck with it at home.
I took the sump plug to Sprint Auto and bought a washer. I asked if they had an oil filter remover that would work in a tight place. They one they had look a little big. He checked the catologue, and found one that looked like it may work, but they didn't have one. He checked the computer, Ingle Farm has 4. I went home, grabbed the filter & drove the Green T4 to the Ingle Farm Store. They had none, but I bought the one the Holden Hill stoe had. "Put some rubber hose on the three pronges, that will make it grip." They supplied some hose.
$17 later I'm on the way home with a happy heart. I tried the "new" remover from underneath and from the top. It would not go on!
After 4 hours I replaced the sump plug and refilled the sump with the Shell Helix, cleaned up and took the Polo for a quick drive to Pt Wakefield.
So, now I have to take it to the Volksfactory & have the filter replaced and make sure they don't over- tighten it.
A great day today!
