  • Gt2860r

I've been doing tons of reading of all sorts of turbo setups lately.
Up until recently I'd been keen on something like the JBS K04 based offerings, Frankenturbo, etc.

From giving the Polo a bit out at Lakeside I found myself wanting so much more top end. Having heaps of grunt down low is nice around the street but I don't give it much around town and if I do I ring it out anyway! I've always been worried about turbo-lag and moving the power up the rev-range, but now I'm thinking I might like it. I think it would give it more of an NA style power-band which I miss.

That being said, I don't want a pig, ie: nothing, nothing, nothing, EVERYTHING!
The K03 at the moment has a brutal little kick around 2200rpm and then not much else after 3500-4000rpm.
I've been looking at the GT2860R which is reported to come in around 3200rpm and continues up. It's rated around 290-330whp.

Getting to what this thread is really about; General consensus is that once you start approaching 400Nm of torque you need to look at rods (Does anyone know if this is wheel or engine?). I don't mind this, but it's a little inconvenient unless I time it right with the missers holidays to do a short motor swap.

To make the conversion more manageable I was thinking of getting everything together, turbo, manifold, new DP, air intake, injectors, etc and fitting it up. I could then run an adjustable external wastegate and keep the power to a standard internal safe limit ..Then, when the missers end of year holidays come around next year I can swap in the stronger bottom end and re-map it for more boooost!

I've been thinking about it a fair bit and I think this would be the best long-term option. Obviously having to get it mapped twice isn't financially ideal but you've got to work around what you've got

Is there anything I'm overlooking? Any educated opinions to help me along?
I could take this to VWvortex where there's a lot doing similar but there's a lot of ..interesting people over that way...

Well Im now running the franken 04 and with my mods, anything more and I will need a 4 motion, as mine stands now I can break traction in 1,2,3 gear so with our light weight and fwd anything more would be money lost. Also the clutch, I now need to update the clutch and diff to suit.

I guess what im saying is unless you want to throw big dyno numbers anything over 200kw would be a waste of time, and even at 200 you will need to learn to drive it and be patient with it.

Cheers and the best of luck with you mods.

          Thanks Van, good feedback.
How do you like the F21, would you pick it second time around?
The reason I'm considering the GT2860R is I'm not a fan of doing things twice; I wouldn't want to fit a K04 and want more..
I get what you're saying though, no point if you can't get it to the ground.
Would you agree with what most say about the K04 - like the K03 but with more top end?

Once I get the car up and running again and if your in or get to Melb come for a ride, The g's are awesome, the torque steer, even with t/c off, the steering wheel, the wheel spin, the in the throttle out of the throttle, you wont want more you will want to figure out how to get more of the energy to the ground. Yes I would do it again and if I had 4 mo I would be looking at the GT2860r. and a complete motor rebuild to support it.

              Cheers

440's troy w/ giac and backing the pressure off to 37/38 psi which is still pumping 27 to 30 lbs boost peak and 22/24 constant and feeling every moment of it.

F21 does look very tempting, i think there rated to 260hp on stock internals which is impressive

Back to the OT, a disco potato in a Polo would probably come in pretty late and savagely. You might need the 2.0 stroker kit to help it spool (or if you really are chasing big numbers, then the low compression stroker kit).

Did you plan for an LSD/TDB to go with the engine/clutch mods?
