  • Help! - Where to mount an amp in the Polo!

    Hi Fellas

This is seriously doing my head in, I've just ordered an Alpine PDX-V9 5ch amp and have been trying to figure out the best place in the Polo GTI to mount it.

I want it to be completely out of the way, so back of the seat is not an option as I don't want it to affect functionality of removing the back seats and storing stuff in the boot

So far the ideal locations I've come up with is the passenger foot well, my plan was to mount a bracket to the vent (screw it into the vent) and then mount a piece of MDF to the bracket, mount the amp to another piece of MDF and Velcro the 2 pieces of MDR together, this seemed like a great idea but its going to have me swearing a hell of a lot until its in place haha

Other option is the boot, somehow mount a bracket to the side and have it sitting flush in the rear

Would love some input as i'm planning on doing this next weekend, where have you guys mounted these things?

The amps size is with 257x192mm @ 50mm high

Just had a look, its possible but would probably have to take the seat out to remove the box?

In the olden days I had an Alpine amp mounted behind the passenger side panel in a MK2 G60. I ran 2 strips of aluminium bar across the hole and then secured the amp to that.

Obviously, you need to make sure there's no vibration.

Yeah, removing the seat would make install easier. Would that be hard?

Removing the seat might be a bit of a mission, Yep thinking option 2, but option 1 meant less cable to run through the whole car

Might hit up Bunnings tomorrow and see if i can find a bracket i can use to make option 1 work, but if not its option 2

Went and bought a plastic bojo tool set to remove all the trim, got some Hertz HSK 165's for the front and rear, will post a thread on my install to give others an idea of the headache I'm about to go through lol

Was in jaycar earlier and saw these strips, seem pretty strong to, could be doable with these!

Decided to stick with mounting it in the foot well and think i may have nailed it, designed a bracket that should work quite well

Also noticed our cars have amazing speaker boxes in the rear, was thinking of sound deadening and sealing this enclosure, then tuning the rears for more kick, may be able to eliminate the sub

My sound system has greatly benefited from replacing the head unit and using some sound deadening. The front door cards are 95%, the rear speakers need to be a fair chunk bigger. Good room for something like a 6" split.

For sound stage etc - it could be worth while upgrading to fronts to real good quality components - then run the 3door rear spaces for 8" subwoofer on both sides. You don't really need rear speakers to be honest. Rear speakers are just fill-ins. and not necessary.

That way you won't loose any boot space at all - and have a very tight sounding car. I like 8" subs max 10". Fully enclosed boxes will give you a very smooth frequency also.

insane kiwi I've been thinking about that for ages, was looking at 6" subs but i could probably put a mounting ring on an 8 and fit it in there

Would sound amazing i recon, will see how the HSK's go, if i find i need more low end ill sell the rear two and come up with a way to mount something like this in there.

The entire rear quarter panel is fairly well sealed, probably 50 litres of air space in there

In my last Polo I had the amp mounted under the passenger seat and I used plastic spiked feet on the bottom of the amp to hold it in place on the carpet, didn't move once.

                            EDIT: HSK's are great

After two solid weeks of messing around I finally nailed it and mounted it in a near impossible location, to be honest it was a pain in the ass lol but so dam worth it

Totally invisible from outside and you can tune it whilst in the drivers seat
