Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Solution to buying a Wavetrac

OK, I think I may have found a solution to the LSD issue.

I have been doing lots of reading about gearing my Polo up for some serious power upgrades.
One of the main issues is already becoming putting the power down to the ground.
From the reading that I have been doing the best solution seems to be a wavetrac LSD.
The issue seems to be that our cars could have one of either two different size ring gears
which can't be determined without stripping down the diff to find out.

I want a Wavetrac. Hear out my idea, I think we can make this work.
If we can get say 5 people who want one I think it could be feasable.

If we get 5 people to commit to the purchase then we negotiate a group purchase.
Two Wavetracs are sent to one capitol city, one of each size, for the first install.
The workshop strips down the car, installs the correct diff then re-orders the size he used.

Upon delivery the next car is delivered and stripped down, measured and the correct diff is
installed then the size that was used is re-ordered. Once all purchases in that region have had their
new Wavetrac installed the unused, unopened diff is sent to the next state for the same procedure to take place.

Once all diffs have been installed we send one unused, unopened diff back to the supplier for a pre-arranged return.

For this to work the shipping would not be reduced, plus there would be an additional interstate shipping
fee plus an international return fee. But this would be split over all purchases, plus if we organise a good discount
for a guaranteed 5 or 6 purchases it may add up to more than the extra shipping. The supplier would be of the understanding that we would return one diff in the end for a refund.

    Thoughts?

Not a bad idea. Although it would be easier to do this with an Australian distributor with taxes, duties and shipping being a killer when you're talking about importing close to $5K worth of goodness in one hit.

I recently spoke to Greg from Carformance (forum vendor) who is really looking to up his already impressive product range. He was going to go with Peloquin, but I mentioned Wavetrac and he said he would definitely look into it. I would personally suggest to him sending me one of each and charging those to my Visa card. Then get the right one fitted and return the other as you say for a refund back to the card. That way he is covered and local for our advantage

Can we get a few people together for a group buy?

It would also be a good start for his distributorship!

How many hours would it take a decent mechanic to fit?

I don't know about the hours but the job requires the gearbox to be removed and disassembled to get to the diff and then the rivets holding it to the ring gear have to be drilled off.

At this stage, someone (may have been Chris Preen) mentioned that the ring gear should be machined flat on the surface that mates to the diff since the stock diff is made of a much softer steel than the Wavetrac/Peloquin/Quaife so the stock diff will conform to any imperfection while the TBD won't (you don't want any gaps here else the fastener loads go from savage to through the roof and the snapped fastener bits will stuff all manner of gearbox parts and housings).

On bolting up the TBD to ring gear, the correct torque is CRITICAL and the washers need to be new and matching the bolts in strength (ARP are the ones supplied with Peloquin and used by just about everyone else) - a soft washer or insufficient torque will give the same loading increase as a poor mating surface with the same eventual failure and damage. Getting the bolt stretch measured is probably the best way to ensure the installed torque is correct rather than trusting a toque wrench (luckily, it'd be easy to measure, for once).

After this, it's a matter of reassembling and then reinstalling the gearbox.

All up, I'll be expecting to pay more the the install than the TBD - I'd be looking for someone who's done it before.

And add me to the list of those interested in a group buy A very clever scheme if the supplier is willing to go along with it (I'd assume we'd all have to pay up front for the diffs to make it worthwhile for them)

Thats a myth created by Peloquin to justify why the diff bolts are snapping .
End of the day it was either Peloquin giving incorrect torque specs for the bolts or a bad design .

I keep both types of wavetracs in stock . If people want to do a group buy thats fine but I can only really fit 1 diff at a time anyway !
