engine whining ?

Strange request but when i'm in traffic and snailing along with the aircon on there seems to be a whining ? almost like the aircon sound is trying to harmonise with the engine ?

Only at a snail pace , drive normal speed and it's gone

I have owned 2 9N polos and both made this noise. In both cases it only seems to start when the temp is set at anything other than the coolest setting. I have had this investigated with both cars, but to no avail (meaning they can't find anything wrong). It doesn't seem to affect performance, just seems to start/stop as the ac compressor is doing the same. I have learned to live with it, and my wife jokingly calls it a supercharger...
