  • Hoyhoy.

Since the last post, I have spoken to this mob, they don't make one on in our size for the Polo.
The closest is 44m long with the right dia. & thread, we need at least 50mm long.
But with a group of around 20, they might accomodate us.
    So who is interested.
    Hooroo.

    • Hi

See this is a really old post, but i have just had this issue.... got lock washers, copper nuts and double nutted it... TIGHT! so far so good

      • Although Jimmy's wire locking has stood the test of time without any stretching or loosening at all, it just took so much time to firstly get the turbo bolts drilled and then the locking process itself. This time we are going to try this

        K03/K04 Turbo Locking Flange - 034 MOTORSPORT

Really cheap and it came with 3 new turbo bolts as well.

Anthony, the bolt locking tab will fit with your manifold, but not on a standard one because it has a raised section in the middle between the bolts.
Also my advise would be not to use those bolts that came with the locking tab, they are only 8.8 tensile.
The ones I had drilled were the same & they stretched & stuffed one of the hole threads in the turbo.

          • Rise ye dead thread!

So, as I'm tackling this on my own, some help please...

Anyone know the aprox cost of the gasket? part number please?

            recomendations for the paste?

Looks Like I'll have to pull out the heat shield, how tho? Does it pull up and out? I can see a collar on the piping behind the engine which could be used to hold up the drivers side of the shield, are there 2 bolts / holding it in place? Other than moving the 1 hard pipe bolted to the back of the block, will I need to remove anything else to get it out?

If you remove all 3 bolts, does the turbo hotside then sag enough to get the gasket in blind?

Lots of questions, would really appreciate any input you can offer. Seems to be about 10,000kms since this last came up, but the gasket wasn't replaced last time... Not sure if i've had a bad seal since or maybe the gasket survived. somehow...

I could have sent you a gasket Ben.... Still can if you want to wait.

                Thanks Gav,
Hadn't thought about it until reading over all the details today.

love one if you're sitting in a spare, cheers. I won't see it until Friday, so any old mail is probably fine.

I'll post one tomorrow. I have a few spares and copper washers too if you ever need any in less than a week.

                  • The locking flange is very interesting. No harm in giving it a try as it's cheap

                    • The locking flange does not take into account the ridge on our manifold between these bolts (need to be bent / longer arms).

Can anyone comment on accessing the 3rd bolt and how to remove the heat shield / insert the spacer?

                      • An update after attacking this yesterday...

                        Was a tricky job, so thought I'd share a few novice notes;
                        - The heatshield is held on by 2 13mm bolts behind the engine, bolts go through the heatshield into the back of the block. The collar over the large turbo hard pipe (1st section of boost piping) can be removed to give better movement to the heatshield, but is a pain to get off. The other sits up against the TIP.
                        - New gasket wasn't too difficult to get in, old one was warped but in reasonable condition.
                        - Encouraging the turbo and manifold to line up again was a 2 man job. Some rocking of the exhaust and engine helped.
                        - I had removed the airbox, front strut brace, hard line attached to the rear of the engine and don't have any VAC stuff in top of the engine, removing all of these were important for access.

Thanks to Gav for the bits.

No worries Ben. Been doing a few turbo removal/installs recently got a handful of spares.

                          • Back already (damn you CC for your extra power, pushing the new bolts out extra quick).

                            • That wasn't long, maybe look into that locking tab kit that Anthony bought. Not sure where it came from though.

                              • I don't think its going to fit, there is a ridge between the 2 bolts furthest from the block and the one that was closest. I expect I'd have to lift the engine to fit it, replacing the gasket and bolts was a big job for me.

Been reading about nord-lock washers. Wonder if that would help (designed for vibration environments, not high temp)
