Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • OBD II bluetooth dongle - will it work in Polo GTI?

I am just wondering if anyone has tried this:

VW Auto Car V1.4 ELM327 OBDII OBD2 Bluetooth Diagnostic | eBay

I want to hook it up to my car and connect it to the Torque app on my android phone, it should be fun....

I got one and it works ok on my S3. I don't trust the diagnostics though, I know the S3 has a secondary air issue, the pump is removed. It doesn't pick that up.

You're right Gavin. It's not good for detecting the faults. I had the overboost problem on one car with the faultlight ON and ELM327 was happy to say "no faults". But hey, I bought it for fun and for less than $30 inc. app for the tablet, it's good, and it entertained me for a couple of hours.

that'd be pretty cool when coupled with a lap timer app (and probably an external gps unit), like harry's lap time for iphone. Can't think of android based ones off the top of my head.

just wondering how accurate the boost readout is?

its an estimate, the polo calculates the probable boost from other sensors.

Are you sure? I reckon it looks at measuring blocks like VCDS does. Seems extremely close to my boost gauge too.

There would be conversion from Mb to PSI, that would be all though.

Torque seems to be the Android app of choice for this. There is also one called aLapRecorderHD.

The biggest limiting factor is the slow ODB rate of the ECU in the 9N3. I only get 1.2Hz updates at best with my Kiwi wifi (on the MkVI Golf, I get about 6Hz) according to Harry's Lap Timer.

I was under the impression the Polo used MAF readings and other measuring tools to approximate the boost.

If there was a air pressure device, I could use it for digital boost gauge like in the TT.

If you are talking 8N/1.8T TTs it's the same ME7 ECU.

yeah, i think ME7.5 in the Polo.

                      Where is the boost sensor?

ok... received my ELM327 today... had a bit of play with it.... the readouts are pretty accurate... however, it does not show BOOST PRESSURE!!! ARHHHH!!!!

Is that with Torque, I can see it in my S3, I just picked a new gauge and scrolled down until I found boost.

                          Has to be there.

yeah.. i can get the boost gauge up in Torque, but it has no readout....

We don't have a boost sensor. Using VCDS there is a readout, but its not a sensor measurement, thus why the cool digital displays in the TT's dont show boost in our Polo.

Or so I believe / remember when I looked into it 2 years back.
