Chipping options and insurance

Finally took delivery of my Polo GTI... thanks for everyone's advice and response in my previous threads...

I used to like the acceleration of the stock GTI, until I drove an APR chipped 152kw example... my world view fell apart and I got bitten by the power bug (again!)...

now I am thinking about chipping my GTI, what is the cheapest option out of all the brands/tuning houses? I am only looking at a moderate gain of ~25kw, that should keep me very happy, I don't intend to mod the rest of the vehicle, so for any higher output, my intake/exhaust will become limiting factors...

also, once chipped, will I have trouble getting my insurance company to cover it? anyone had any issues? Cheers...

As per the insurance issues. You need to contact your insurance company, but the tunes aren't detectable that easy and when you don't fit additional hardware, then ....

I have always declared that the car is chipped, with no I'll effects on insurance.

In that though, this topic has been covered a few times, and can be found via using the Search function.

Congratulations on the new purchase! Hope to see it driving around soon! There are a few places that do tuning in Canberra that I know of, and there are probably more:
Evolve Technik - are located in Phillip behind Lennock VW.
APR - Canberra VW Centre located in Belconnen. Normal prices for them.
My friend knows people who work at Autotech located in Hume and swears by them.

I also think I heard someone say in a forum, that NRMA have allowed for mods and dropped their prices. Also keep in mind that as of August/September this year they will up the price of registering your car by another $52 - even though I have been told we have the most expensive fees here!

I think you'll find it hard to have someone just inject 25kw on a tune. I would say there's no point, you're not making the best of what you have. The standard car is able to run 150kw no problems.

Custom-Code tunes on the Polo, can have the boost turned down using a software utility and a diagnostic cable. I have never done it for anyone though.

As far as the cheapest, Depends what you have access to in Canberra.
CC is 650 I believe, no idea about evolve. I think Giac was around a grand, APR has dropped to 1250 I think I saw.

Having a Viezu dealer close by would be good for peace of mind, not sure of their pricing, seems to be up there.

There are always a few things you should do to go with the tune, let's not call them mods, let's say they are accompanying parts.
PD160 intake to air box, from Jabbasport if you can't find one elsewhere. This is just a bigger pipe for the air to flow through, 10min job.
I would consider an upgraded diverter valve, more boost will likely slowly kill the stock one. Lots of options, personally I'm running the Forge 008. I would put new spark plugs in, 1 range colder. This is again not really a mod, just selecting the right consumables for the new power of the engine.

Be sure to read, ask lots of questions, post photos, tinker and enjoy.

RE insurance, I'm with NRMA and all they cared for was that the car is still road worthy. It is, so they didn't ask or care anymore about it.

As for a tune, speak to the local members of canberra, some may take you for a run or find a tuner that you're comfortable with.

I also be watching for any PD160 that might pop up in the forum, damn these things are scarce here and expensive to order new... is it difficult to fit the diverter? can it be a DIY job?

I think my first "replacement consumable" (not a mod ) will be K&N drop in filter... have not opened the airbox yet, but I've been led to believe that the car is still running on the original paper filter after 50,000km.

Fitting the DV is easy as pie. I have an APR R1, pd160 and BMC panel filter you could buy. BMC needs a clean but that's it.
