Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Acceptable offset deviation?

My Polo has an offset of 43, what deviation either side is allowed?
    Is there a general rule?

It depends on what wheel width you go with as that will affect how much the offset impacts on the poke/cover of the wheel.

So the lower the offset the more it sticks out?

If you keep the same wheel width, the lower offset means it sticks out further yes.

Wheels have offsets, not cars. Measured in mm.

as team_v, offset is nothing without a width.

most cars come with different wheel width and offset options from factory, so yes, you can change.
depends what you are trying to archive

Ok, well i just want to know im getting new wheels currently. ATM i have 15"x6" with 195/55
and the new wheels are 17" x7" with 40ET and i will get 215/45 tyres
              Is that offset a problem?

                Wheel Offset Calculator
                above is your answer
                so 6et43?
                vs 7et40

Inner Clearance: 10mm LESS (the inside of the wheel to the strut housing)
Outer Position: EXTEND an extra 16mm (position of the outside edge of the wheel)

I cant imagine the 16mm outwards would be a issue, not sure how much room you have on the inside of the polo...?
thats if the 6et43 is correct... I thought it might have been more like 6et38

and 215/45/17 on a polo is way to big from memory, need something like 205/40 or 215/40/17 max

need to pull a wheel off and check what is stamped in the back of it, or if any of the other polo drivers know what their standard 15x6 wheel was?

id ignore what people say is "ideal", its rubbish when its not in relation to a wheel width

Ok all sorted, called up local tyre/wheel place and the fit shoudnt be a problem, only issue it getting a tyre 215/45 actually changes the circumference quite a bit, so im going to have to go a 215/40 which is a rather odd size

ET40 is fine on a 7 inch. Have a look at what's available in those wheels you're looking at as you may be able to go lower than et40 - at et30 you will have the same (well, 1mm more) outer clearance as my TT wheels which are 7.5" et35 and fill the arches pretty perfectly. I wouldn't go any lower offset than that, though.

As for tyres, go 205/40 on the 7" rim. KU31s are pretty cheap and reliable in that size or there are other options, too.

I'd be after a lower offset, but it should be ok with a 205/40.
Is the car lowered or will you be lowering it later?
Are these dream wheels or just something that came up?

Here are some OEM examples of what can fit: http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/w...eels-5x100.htm

I have some photos in my thread of the TT's fitted, looked good
