Hi bakersdelight and welcome to the forum.

While I don't own the 9n or 9n3 version of the polo GTI, I did consider it as a replacement to my mk4 golf. Instead I went new but that's another story.

To try and dispel some the myths you have brought up, as others have said, the 1.8T 20V motor has been in circulation in all manner of VAG vehicles for close to 20 years and as also mentioned, regarded as one of if not THE most bullet proof of VWs motors, especially turbo motors. Parts and labour in reality are no more expensive than any modern day vehicle unless you go to a VW dealership due to how they are trying to position themselves in the market place as a "premium" brand (which us as multiple owners know not to be all that true!) over other vehicle marques.

In regards to running costs, if you are just talking fuel consumption then yes, the colt might be slightly better. Mind you, I don't know much about the colt but the GTI will have service intervals of 15,000kms/1 year. If you're handy on the tools and can carry out the bulk of your own service work (oil, filters, brake pads etc) then you will save a packet. There is also a wealth of knowledge, experience an expertise on this forum because that same motor has been used across a massive breadth of vehicles including Mk4 golf GTI, Audi a3, Audi a4, Audi TT, Vw passat(I believe) etc. The colt while being a Mitsubishi doesn't have that same timeline, is comparitively rare as hens teeth and Inthink you might struggle to find many examples of vehicles than not only share the same basic platform but have clocked up well over 300,000kms.

The choice is yours but I am biased and I know which I would go with

      thanks guys...

yes, the Colt is f*gly as sin... but strangely that is what appeals to me... just imagine the look on people's face when you gun this f*gly mini-MPV around... and the Recaros (same as the ones in Lancer Evo 8 MR) in the Colt are just divine, I've been in Skylines, Golf/Polo GTI's etc, but none of their seats come close to the Recaros in the Ralliart Colt when it comes to holding your butt in place...

took an 08 GTI for a drive today, it came chipped with the 152kw APR... but due to traffic and fear of losing my license, I didn't really open it up, I was expecting the power delivery to be much more linear compared to the Colt, but instead, it did have a sudden surge after 3,000RPM, could it be because of the APR chip? The overall cabin ambience is streets ahead of the Colt (despite odd bits of cheap/flimsy looking plastics)... Did not get the chance to test its cornering ability, but it felt pretty solid, although not as quite flat/solid/responsive as the Colt, I guess the lighter weight, extra chassis welds and strut brace in the Colt do help... and the shifting feel is in another league compared to the Colt, the Colt had a rubbery, unnatural feel to it...

when the engine was not fully warmed up, I revved it a bit in neutral (only to 2,500RPM, if that), when the RPM fell back to idle, the car kind of jerked/hopped a bit. When the engine was fully warmed up after a short drive, much of the jerking/hopping was gone, but still existed to some extent. is it an indication that the infamous control arm bushings are going/gone?

I really like the Polo, but the price is a bit high, will wait around for a cheaper one to show up

The power surge is due to the stock intake before the air box , needs the PD160 to breathe better

You can see the control arm bushes by lying next to the car.

Stock suspension is not going to be very sporty, plenty of options if you care to spend.

I dont intend to mod the car... just need it to be reliable, do you have a pic showing what the bushes look like? Should I lie in front of, or behind the wheel? Cheers...

The car stays reliable when modified. I have an APR tune, coilovers, intake, brake, and wheel mods, and no adverse effects...

I hate to say it mate but it sounds like you might be better off with the Colt for this reason. To get the Polo to a state of handling bliss it will cost you a bit so if you don't intend to mod and therefore spend money I would go with the Colt.

However the Polo is amazing if you have a few spare grand in your pocket and even then it's so easy to want more because the platform is excellent so the further you go the more you realise this and as a result want even more again.

                  Best of luck!

Well... They're not lost, they're just at home in the shed!

                      How about this?

Needs a bit of TLC but you should have a few grand left over for modding.
