Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Polo's at the snow

Hey Guys. I scored a job working in Thredbo Resort this winter.

Does anyone have any knowledge on whether snow chains will fit on my GTi riding on stock shocks and HR springs?
There's only approximately 4cm of clearance between the tyre and the bit on the shock that holds the bottom of the spring.
My gut feeling is that this is not enough clearance, or will mean fitting chains will be much more of a pain in the ass than it usually is.

Otherwise, does anyone know where I can pick up some stock springs?

not sure if these are accepted when you are "required" to carry chains but look pretty effective

Hi killingwithasmile. You forgot to paste your link, but I am assuming you are referring to 'autosocks'? Laws and Regulations

From what I can gather in NSW, these are only allowed to be used with 4WD or AWD vehicles. FWD still require traditional chains

Yep, these would work great, except they are $600
But I might just have to bite the bullet.

Will you be staying in the resort or travelling up from Jindy each day?
In 20 odd yrs of going to Perisher i think I have used chains once or twice.

Maybe get some 15inch steel rims, fit some all season tyres

there's a good debate on snow chains here

What is the official definition of a 'snow chain'

someone suggesting there are cheaper options than the k-summit too

sign up there and say hello, specially if you are going to be a Thredbo regular. I'm debating whether to head off to Thredders this year for holiday. Its expensive from Perth!
