  • Oil Filter - Polo GTI

    Gday,

    Had a question regarding the oil filter. Was going to do an oil change through a mechanic at 7500km and I am sweet with the oil I need to use (Castrol Edge 0W-40 - someone tell me if I am wrong).

    However, with the filters, I need to know:

    1. What brand should I use? Or should I get it straight from VW?
    2. What is the model number?

    Also, anyone changed the oil filter themselves on the GTI? Is it a difficult job? Will most likely get someone to do it just to cover my ass, but I am curious to know!

    Cheers

    Well regardless of how simple the job is, anything not done by a mechanic (even as simple as an oil change) where it is part of the recommended servicing will void the warranty.

    Think twice before you throw it away just for oil changes. If the Stealership is too pricy, just get ultratune or someone to do it.

      if you use the specified brand of oil filter which is recommened by VW there is no grounds what so ever to void your warrany.

        This is a furphy, there is no obligation to use a genuine filter, VW or any other vehicle manufacturer cannot void a warranty just because you did not fit a genuine filter. If however you fitted a non genuine filter and it could be demonstrated that an engine failure was a direct result of the non genuine filter they would have grounds to void your warranty.

        Having said that, it makes no sense to do your own servicing on a new car, a recorded service history by qualified personnel makes a lot of sense from the point of view of resale.

        Cheers

          I mean if you do the work yourself and the crank snaps in half they will blame it on an incorrect oil change. Even if you did it properly they'll stick to their guns saying "He wasn't qualified hence there is zero chance it was done right."

            They might try that but I think it very unlikely, they would have to prove the relationship between the work carried out and the failure.

            But once again I would say, it makes no sense to do your own servicing on a new car, a recorded service history by qualified personnel makes a lot of sense from the point of view of resale.

              I think the point he is trying to make is he wants to do an early self service at 7500Ks. Does not mean he won't get a vw log book stamped service at 15000ks. As long as he uses the vw specified engine oil and oil filter and does no screw it up not only will it not void the warranty but how on earth would the dealer know.

                  Yep, agree would not be a problem. I was just pointing out that the fact that an oil & filter change was done by the owner would not automatically void warranty and also the same for the use of a non genuine filter no matter what the dealer may say.

                    Does anyone know where you can buy the genuine filters online?

                      Phone is probably easier though!

                        Hey,

                        Just to clear things up (I was very tired when I wrote my comment yesterday) - I definitely won't do the oil or filter change while under warranty - just wanted to know whether anyone has done it, and if it was difficult to do. It was a pain in the backside in the old car!

                        Also, I am planning on going back to VW for the 15000km services, as I will probably only keep the car for 3-4 years and would rather have a service history kept by VW for resale purposes.

                        But, for the earlier oil changes, I was going to supply the oil + filter to a mechanic and get them to do it - preferably one that specialises in Euro cars!

                          Aslong as you use a genuine oil filter then VW will never ever know the oil has been changed inbetween the scheduled services.

                          They dont need to know, but its moreso for your own peace of mind.

                          Also, i dont think you need to find a euro specialist to change your oil. Any mechanic can do it, and its just as easy to do it yourself. Saves on labour too

                            Fair call - I will probably use someone who I have used in the past and is very good + licensed.

                            Now I know I mentioned the Castrol Edge but noticed Mobil 1 also have an appropriate 0W-40 oil. Do people have any idea what oil dealers have used for their servicing?

                              Just a note on this thread. I've been trying to find info in my handbook for the Pogo GTI regarding oil capacity etc ... and I find this hard to believe but the lovely, leather-bound GTI handbook has nothing WHATSOEVER about the GTI oil system. Go figure.

                              I was going to do an oil change today but all the oil info in section 3.3 of the handbook is for .... wait for it:
                              - 40kw petrol;
                              - 47kw petrol;
                              - 55kw petrol;
                              - 63kw FSI petrol;
                              - 74kw petrol;
                              - 47kw SDI diesel;
                              - 51kw TDI diesel;
                              - 59kw TDI diesel;
                              - 74kw TDI; and finally
                              - 96kw TDI.

                              No 110KW Turbo mentioned. WTF? This IS the official GTI handbook. Anyone with relevant info appreciated.

                              Dave
