Just curious, has anyone ever ran the gti with an open exhaust?
i.e. no CAT, muffler etc - just straight out of the dump pipe into the atmosphere?

not suggesting it should be done on the street
but perhaps when going to the drags or a track day?

the old hot rodders used to uncork their exhausts for race day, but plug them all back up for street use. i think you could even get a valve that turned in one posi is full open exhaust, turned the other way is normal exhaust. probably illegal for street use though.

EPA will hammer you if you get caught using a screamer pipe (exhaust exit before cat to atmosphere)
Best bet is to get a performance downpipe with a high flow cat and if you need more noise remove the resonator or rear muffler.

The varex system is only functional from the cat back.

Asside from noise, what benefit will a screamer pipe give you over a performance downpipe and stage 2 tune?

Haven't been able to find any possible way to mount Varex exhaust, looked into them a while back, thought it would be a nice idea for a friends 118 though a 2.0L noise would probable benefit more.
Anyone heard otherwise or know of any way to fit them? Just seems a bit difficult especially with the LHS orientation of the 118's tailpipes.

the screamer pipe, on a turbo motor, will allow complete free flowing exhaust. therefore turbo should spin quicker and egine should rev quicker.
i would not suggest this mod is used in place of a decent downpipe or ecu upgrade. but rather in additino to it for race day only. much easier than pulling a exhaust off at the drag strip.

i would guess the same thing on a N/A motor would not be a benefit.

But how much more performance would you gain over a 2.5" downpipe with a high flow cat?
I can only see it making say another 5kw and saving maybe 15 kg so you could do better by just running half a tank of fuel or getting a slightly more aggressive tune.

A lot easier than the screamer pipe for the few times you would actually utilise it.

Screamer pipe is from the wastegate only, bit difficult to do unless you have an external gate...
