  • 700km to a Tank in a GTI!

I cant believe I pulled this off lol

I drove to Sydney just before Christmas and decided to see how much fuel i could get into a tank, on my first attempt i think i got 48 liters into it and it got me to a servo 50k's from Golburn before the light came on (I was fanging it)

On my way back, I filled up at a Shell Servo in Albury Wodonga last Monday, drove to work and back each day (48k round trip)

695 (could of done 700 easily)

Just filled up again as i was near completely empty and decided to see how much it could take, the tank will easily hold 55 liters after pressing the magic nozzle near the filler cap, it releases the gas from the tank, and i have no idea where the fuel goes but after the first click you can get 10 - 15 more liters into it.

On the trip average was 7.2L per 100 (doing 110 to 1 on average), with the APR chip and Seat Intake, pretty fuel efficient if you ask me

I achieved the same when driving up to GAF in Canberra last year. Smug .

Wow 53L. I've never tried to do that trick more than past about 45L. How many times do you do it to get 53L? Must be there at the pump for a while!

        Diesels... :p

It did take a few minutes of slow pour and releasing the gas, but perfect if your doing interstate runs and don't want to stop,

If i wasn't using the aircon for half the trip I could of just about done it on the 1 tank

I was averaging 7.3L/100km on trip from Syd to Melb via cooma and canne river. Average speed was close enough to 100.

I got 530kms out of my Mk3 Golf VR6 that was on 95 fuel too, so very pleased with the car and myself!

You'd hate to know how far my Pod went on the last tank (75% suburban, 25% cruise)

I've done on the GTi along the highway to/from Can-Melb and hit as low as 6.8lt/100km (cannot remember in which direction). This is with a DNA tune (only engine mod) and very cruisy (no heavy foot, maybe a prod here and there ). That was with stock 16" wheels.

Not sure how much petrol I put in but it must be close to 50lt in the tank pressing the button. I never take the fuel gauge that low as it would be a headache if I ran out of petrol on a highway run (less than 50km left on the tank and I start to look for petrol as stops can be far in between).

City driving is always short distance but on a smooth run on gentle revs I hit 7.8lt/100km to 9.8lt/100km. all depends if I get the lights and traffic or not. Short distances of 10km is not a real good gauge as there is a lot of fluctuation.

lol! i was about to say... "what means this '$85 for a tank of fuel?'" lol

but, FLAT6, congrats! to be honest, when gtidave had his little rascal (pog gti, worked well), i was surprised - he would cruise in higher gears than myself for in-and-around-town duties.

i reckon you could get some pretty rad fuel economy in the gti's, too.

do you guys have a vent function? a little button on the inside of the fuel mouth?

A little off topic but I've got a E1 GTS that runs the JTG system and it cost $43/80ltrs (glad I only use premium on start ups) and I get anywhere from 550-650klm's and it pulling a mild 269rwks on gas, so I'm pretty pleased overall.

You need to get serious and start shifting at 1200rpm and cruising from 50km/h onwards in 5th, Scotty. The Pod will easily do this on flat roads. Of course, with the SuperPro torque arm bush, it might give a pretty serious massage

Yep. flat6 certainly knows as he gets 10-15 extra litres (I get 10.75 more). I used about 57 litres before chickening out and filling with my last tank.
The stupid MkVI Golf can't be vented so the Polo can actually hold more fuel than the Golf

Assuming the tank holds ~45l without pressing that button, I've ran mine 20-30kms past showing zero fuel/kms left and still get 38l in the tank. I really should try this button trick, when I usually average mid 8's to mid 9's, an extra 10l tank capacity is needed. 45l is too small a tank IMO.

seangti, you'd be amazed by how much vent space there is. You can just push the button with the end of the nozzle and keep filling (check after adding an extra 10 litres if you want to stop at first click level). If you are just about to start going on a long trip, you can fill it right up to the edge of the filler neck.

Would one of you petrol guys mind running your car dry (with a small container of PULP) to find out the actual tank capacity of the 9N(3)? I did this with my previous cars.

I'd do it except that diesels need to have the air pumped out of the fuel lines if run dry.

How would this work? Until first click, until all vent space gone, until petrol is gushing out?

When cruising on highways etc i refill when I do one of my rest stops (every 2-3hrs of driving). So it doesn't really matter whether i can cram 45L or 50L into the tank. One of the rest stops will line up with the gauge heading for the red zone.

Sometimes I wish I still had my dear lil pog. Anyway, I'm pretty sure mine never got anywhere near 55l capacity even after using the fuel filler button trick and that was standing at the pump cycling b/w pressing the button to filling up more.mMost I got was an extra 5-7l at most and that was fill'd to the neck.
