Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Manufacturers say the XR4 is faster. I've had the debate on other forums that the Polo is actually faster than an XR4, but now those videos provide a bit more than just my personal experiences.

Also in the original Video, read the comments, the guy said he did a 15.1 later that day but it wasn't filmed.

I have heard the XR4 handles better than a polo GTI, but the GTI chops it in a straight line. On a track, I guess the handling counts for a bit more.

At least with the GTI you can upgrade the suspension to be better than the XR4, and it is already quicker on the straight before you go down the road of chipping!

Personally, I am glad I didn't wait for the XR4, but can understand why others would go for it - $2k cheaper, bigger wheels with Pirellis, etc. But I much prefer the look of the GTI and turbo was a must for me.

Either way its great that more and more pocket rockets are coming on the market!

The XR4 does look good. But as others have said, Suspension + chip and the Polo is a monster. To get more power out of the XR4 a chip won't do all that much (certainly won't add 40kw like a polo). Plus with handling that comes down to the driver a lot. All depends who has the bigger balls.... unless your up against a 911..... then its all over.

I just like the note of the polo better, plus the noise of the turbo as you give it some stick.

So said the driver of an SV8 commo the other day when we were dead even second and third gear, through fourth i started to nudge ahead. (although he did smoke me from a standstill)

              (not on the street )

Then i asked what he had done and he replied ''quite alot dont you worry'' with a cocky smile on his face. i asked again and he said well the thing thats helped him the most are his diff gears which he changed 4:11 or something?
But i could tell it had intake and full exhaust.

Rolling there was no difference, but from a standstill i got blown in first gear.

His cocky smile quickly faded when i said mine was a 1.8 with a simple computer remap

4:11 Diff gears in a a manual GEN III will nudge it into the low to flat 13's easy. With full zaust intake and Ls1 edit thats a very low 12 second car righ there...

A low 12 second from an LS1 edit, diff gears and full exhaust? I doubt it.

A few years ago I remember racing a GEN 3 at WSID with an exhaust, edit, intake and slicks. He did a 12 something.
