  • Interior/map light switch broken: any help?

    Hey guys,

The driver's-side map light (the little push-button one, not the central switch one) switch is broken in my GTI. The push-button switch won't push back up - when you try to push it back up into the off position, it just comes back down and the light comes on. No idea how this happened, I've been away from my car for a fortnight.

Anyone had this happen before, or does anyone have any clues? If nothing else I might resort to the service manual to see if I can remove the entire light assembly.

If it would help I can photograph how the light assembly looks from underneath - I have my entire roof lining off at the moment, which you might have to do to fix it (fingers crossed you don't) but I don't think it comes away from the roof lining! Let me know!

That would help, if you're able. It's annoying driving around with the light on constantly.

a similar problem i had before, the switch just won't go back up. it happened without any warning too. initially i just slid in a piece of paper to make the switch stay in place, but then it looked silly and kind of embarrassing lol. when i pulled it off to see what i can do to fix it, saw that it's a complete assembled module..only the bulbs are accessible/replaceable. there is no way to dismantle the whole thing to get to the switch mechanism.

ended up replacing the whole unit with a new one. the part number will be on the back. 6Q0 947 105 C71 N, the part number might be superseded by an updated/improved design, but it will fit none the less. the unit comes complete with bulbs, so you can keep the old bulbs as spare.

you don't have to remove the entire lining, the dome light module is held in place by clips, you just have to use extra force to pull it out. and it helps to remove the other piece of blank plastic plate first (which slots in with the module).

Thanks, you're a big help! I guess I'll order a new one some time and put it in. Cheers.

This is exactely the same thing that happened to my driver's-side map light today. My wife rang Highway VW Springwood Qld & they knew 'you have a problem'. IS this a common problem for this Polo or VW?

They took the driver's-side map light out and then quoted $181 supply & fit a new light assembly (I do not value it that much). Any wrecked Polo's in Qld?

As this is a sealed unit and it is broken and unserviceable according to VW, has anyone else had this same problem?
Also has anyone dessembled the sealed map light assembly to attempt a fix?

            Cheers Al

I ended up just taking out both map light globes, and leaving both switches 'down' so they look equal. Ridiculous, I know, but it's a temporary solution that costs $0. I'll buy a new assembly and fit it myself when I have free dollars, but it's very low on the list of priorities.
